I am arguing with a guy at work, If Trouba didn't sign with the Jets and report here or the AHL, what were his other hockey options for the remainder of this year ?

He could have gone to play in the OHL for the Kitchener Rangers who own his rights, IIRC.

Or he could`ve hit the gym and wait for next year.

He was in college, and had to decide to leave his classes, quit his degree, and withdraw to come Winnipeg.
