I think he would be reluctant but what if another club wanted to trade the Leafs a top 4 D who was actually young enough they didn't need to protect him for the expansion draft? That is a unicorn. A late first is nice but someone who is young and can actually play is nicer. More realistic is to at least get a 2nd or 3rd back in a larger deal.

For the right player it means valuable stuff has to be on the table so if you don't want to deal the 1st, or Robertson, or Liljegren/Sandin then what is there that gets anything special back? I think they hit very well with Robertson and Sandin. It depends on who they can get but the window is now and they haven't even added these two to the mix. A late 1st isn't an issue on a club with the kind of young talent.

Could work as we have a lot of talent in the cupboards but only if it makes sense

There's only two places you want to be in the NHL, on top or on the bottom.
The Leafs are riding high and you want to push them to the peak.
The future? You certainly don't want half-way. Either Cup run or top-5 pick.
This draft pick will only prevent the Leafs from falling on their face down the road,
which is something you WANT to happen.

There is no demonstrable advantage of trading a 1st before you know where it falls. We were a coaching change away from the Lafreniere sweepstakes. Do not trade a 1st preemptively.

Wouldn't mind if they traded the 2021 1st depending on return.

IMO if you trade it, it needs to be in a package for a young controlled Defensive Defenceman (Contract w/ years left at a good number or make sure you can resign the player).
