my 2$ has been on Gorges for a long time, he'll be the perfect transition between Gionta and Galchenyuk ;)

I wouldn't give C to Markov at this point with what I've seen from him in the last 10-15 games. He obviously has slowed down significantly, and sure he can likely play for a bit in a smaller role. I wouldn't have much of a problem keeping him around as a PP specialist being our #4-6D on 5v5, I think he's still valuable this way.

But if he comes back as Captain, then there will be pressure to play him more, for him to produce, etc. that I don't think we should add to him or to the coach right now. Do you seriously think Gionta would be playing this much if he wasn't Captain? He's been as bad as Cole if not worse, yet he's been given every possible opportunity to shine, being sent in the SO twice, in 4v3 PP in a crucial situation (I still have a hard time with this one...), on most PPs, he's never been retrograded to the 3rd-4th line (although you could argue that he's on the 3rd line right now with Bourque out).

I think it's very hard to have your Captain being a fringe/role player (unless he was Captain of the team for a good 5+ years before in a dominant role), and I really think Markov is going there in the next years, his legs just can't hold.

I'd be fine with Gorges as C for the moment until a younger guy grows into the role in some years. For the moment he seems like the guy that should gets it, I don't see anyone else that would be a perfect fit, captaincy experience lacking aside.

But most of all, I REALLY want Gio gone this Summer. I can see how you wouldn't trade your C in the middle of the season, but I would definitely do it in the off-season, it's also easier for Bergevin/Therrien because he wasn't their guy. The team DOES need to get bigger, but the only sucky small player we have is Gionta, Desharnais and Gallagher are actually producing and still improving.

I disagree on Markov having slowed down in terms of overall performance. He still is solid defensively, still takes good decisions with the puck and makes terrific breakout passes, and he can still set up the PP well.

Did you expect him to keep up a ppg scoring ratio? Let's not forget he is coming back from major injuries.

But I would be playing him less. There's no reason to have him play on average 24min a game when we have guys like PK and Gorges who could be given the tougher minutes. I'd have him average around 21-22, still as our #1 D.

In any event, Markov will always be a top 3-4 player. He still is a #1 for more years ahead, and at the end part of his career, he'll remain a top 4 at the very least. He'll never drop to being a bottom pairing guy. His commitment to the game is irreproachable however and his leadership is evident. He's been a long time Hab, has agreed to somewhat of a discount price before his injuries, loves the city, even got his citizenship.
No question, Markov and it's not even close.

Gorges looks like a big whiner. He's really vocal and all but I wouldn't give it to him.

Plekanec, Markov and Gallagher(assuming its in a few years) are all ahead of him IMO.

Keep in mind that this is a new direction.

The Leafs game really killed me. He has nothing of a captain. Getting is crap beat by a leaf player, then whining to the camera and then whining to the other team...

I like the captain to be part of the core. Gorges' a heart and soul guy but he's closer to the role player / supporting cast category than a key piece to this team.

I'd vote for Pacioretty. His work ethic and attitude are as great as anybody but he acually has the tools to be a difference maker in key situations.

Gorges is the kinda guy who will do anything for the team. He definitely is a lock for a consistent 'A', but the more think about it, the more I'm interested in seeing other options develop for the C. To me, it doesn't matter all that much if the C is worn by a support player or a star, but I'd prefer the latter.

I don't think that Gorges can be captain: he never was one in juniors. :sarcasm:

That's a good point, I'd like a captain with some captaining experience.

Agree 100%. Gorges has never, I repeat NEVER, been a captain.

Gorges is perfect. He'll stay with us long enough so that when he leaves Galchenyuk is going to be mature enough to get the C.

I say no. Not too many great teams have their 10th best player as captain. My guess is they make a bold choice (as many other of Bergevin's decisions) and make a MaxPac and eventually Galchenyuk captain.

Pacioretty is a guy you want to be Habs for life - this means Galchenyuk becomes captain at like 30...

I don't really see Pacioretty as a captain anyways.

Koivu, oh wait... Gainey ****ed that up too.

Hearing Josh speak, don't think he's the smartest tool around, nor do i think he has a leader-type personality. He sure does seem to try, but i doubt many people really listen to what he has to say. i catch myself roll my eyes when he starts talking, and im sure there are a few teammates of his who feel the same.

That said, we need D that play like Josh and teams needs him.

This, a million times. All of it.

On top of that he has bad mouthed ex-teammates to the medias (Hamrlik) and been less than enthusiastic about some others (Subban). To me, that is not what captains do.

Not to mention Gorges is not an impact player.

I'd be incredibly disappointed if Gorges was named captain. He'd be an even worse choice than Gionta.

Gorges is perfect.

Jean Béliveau is perfect.

Maurice Richard is perfect.

Bob Gainey is perfect (as a captain).

Gorges ? PUUUUHLEASE.

I think the short list is probably Markov, Gorges, and Plekanec. I don't think the Habs will give a young player the captaincy like other teams have done, but you never know, new managment and culture and all.

Hypothetically speaking, if Perry made it to July 1st unsigned (or rights acquired at draft) would you try enticing him to sign by offering the C? I believe Boston done this with Chara. The guy has credentials that players will respect and look up to: Stanley Cup Winner, Olympic Gold Medalist, Rocket Richard winner, and Hart winner. He would also be the team's best player.

Of course, Gionta would have to be moved from the team in an earlier deal.

I'm a big fan of Markov, but I think the Habs had their fair share of "silent captains". We need a guy who's more vocal, who's at ease as much on the ice than in the locker room than with the journalists.

I would vote for Gorges as the next Captain, with Markov and Plekanec as the assistants. In 3-4 years, when Galchenyuk has proven he's the real deal, then he should be next in line.

I'll go off the board here and say Tomas Plekanecs, he's been with the team for his entire career, imo he is the heart and soul of this team. He's good in every single situation and he is highly intelligent. Time we reward our home grown talent.

To me, it should be pleks AINEC. In fact, he should be captain already.

Gorges is a warrior. He's captain material. This year, his play hasn't been the best hockey, he can do better. Is he my pick? Well, let's see later.

Not a gorges fan. Reminds me of one of classmates that sniffed gasoline as a child.

Pleks for the win, it's about time he gets the respect he deserves.

Maybe, but I've been saying Plekanec is the real captain of this team, regardless of letter. It's about time he gets it I think.

I could see this happening. Max Power has lead by example and overcame great odds after being injured and still come back stronger and better then before. That's the kind of leader this team needs.

Plekanec need's it IMO. He's always been tough for himself, he even went out and called himself a little girl. He's the heart and soul of this team.

Either that or give it to Price.

They should come up with a higher level of captaincy for Markov and give him the "G" and he can be the first official General in NHL history ;)

Long time reader, first time post!
I see how people get can get annoyed with Gorges - that vocal guy who says lots of useless stuff .."let's go boys!" , "first to the puck guys!" , "let's win this period guys!" ..what redeems Gorges is that he truly sacrifices his body for the team. You need guys like Gorges, but...he's no captain.... the next captain of the Habs has to be the franchise player...Carey Price :sarcasm:
