They take away your point if you lose while subbing. So subbing in Mrazek is a really crazy move, especially since he will come in cold and be forced to do perhaps the most taxing thing a goalie can do. Pretty sure you forfeit the loser point if you switch goalies even heading into the OT without injury forcing it. Now what would be interesting is to throw him out for the final thirty seconds of regulation and hope he could stretch himself out during the brief intermission some as well. But still I don't like sending him out cold, people would scream bloody murder if he went down to an injury like that.

For the record Washington is easily the best shootout team in the league. If we were under the old rules they would likely throw up something like a 10-1 record in them. Some night somebody would manage to squeak one out. But Holtby is one of the best goalies in the league at them. Oshie is the best shooter we have ever seen at them, Kuz is ridiculous and they have a couple more guys sitting over there that they can throw out as well including Ovie. Good luck playing that team in the shootout... Makes the lazy 4 on 3 PP that much worse.:shakehead

true enough. i was only kidding anyway. in my opinion the loss can be blamed (for the most part) on the lazy pp and shady officiating. oh well, what can you do. it will even out in the end.

The bottom line is we got a point from a game we probably should've lost in regulation and gave away an extra point to a team that's likely not going to be affecting our playoff spot situation. Overall not a bad night, to be honest.

Outshot 40-23 and all anyone is talking about is that we had bad goaltending in the shootout. Yeah this was a Howard game alright.

Only saw the 1st period but seems it was our best and we managed to steal a point. Can't be too upset, Caps are a top team and we extend our point-streak.

Datsyuk needs more help. He always gets the short end of the stick when wingers are given out and it doesn't look like he's going to carry around dead weight anymore. Athanasiou should take Helm's spot and I'd consider switching Jurco and Richards. It would be a little like a second version of Abby-Z-Larkin.
At the very least put Helm on the 4th line, even at his best he's not much of a top-6 guy and this year his hands are complely gone.

Hey Cyborg,

I'm respectfully asking you why you consider Datsyuk a TOP tier player in this league still. I mean it's clearly debatable, and I'm not saying he's completely washed up, but to say he's a top tier star these days seems ridiculisly optimistic

He is still elite when it comes to possessing the puck in the offensive zone. Hell, he might be THE best in that regard. It seems like his playmaking and most of production has dried up though. And I don't think it's coming back.

He was arguably the best player in the league last year when healthy. Richards is probably the worst forward on this team right now and totally anchoring that line... much more than Helm.

My understanding you lose the loser point if you pull the goalie in OT and get scored on?

My understanding of this has always been you cannot intentionally sub a goalie in once OT hits. Think for once the NHL had the foresight of where this could go, with a specialist third goalie. We just signed a 6'10 300 lbs, he cannot play all that well and would be picked apart in the run of play for 60 minutes if he was forced to move a bunch but my God can he play the shootout. Now nobody would carry him instead of one of their extra forwards or D-man now with the 3 on 3, but when 20% + of games were heading there somebody could have done something the NHL was not a fan of. You could always dress the mythical player described as your backup for all games.

It is more of the cold goalie deal that has me against this deal because in all honesty Mrazek's ability to move the puck makes him an automatic sub in OT before we even get to the dreaded shootout scenario, if you were not worried about him tearing his groin.

Officiating was fine. The high stick on Larkin should have been called but other than that, their forecheck gave us fits all night.

We were lucky to come away with a point.

And please don't compare Ovie to Crosby.

Jurco has a cut on his face that begs to differ.

Jurco's best game in ages, thought he looked good. In fact I liked that 4th line tonight.

He hasn't played that many yet, just 13 now I think. After a long recovery from surgery he wouldn't have had the best offseason training wise as a result, and no training camp.

That said, one hot streak will silence questions. I'm confident we just haven't fully seen him yet, he'll find his rhythm eventually. He is getting pretty old but his game is very cerebral so he should age pretty well. He won't lose his vision.

Happy to get the point considering that
- Thanks refs for no PPs
- Thanks refs for calling Green on the Ovi dive for the GWG
more importantly - Thanks RWs for the most embarrassing PP I have ever seen in my life. I would have been marginally less embarrassed if they just skated it back to the neutral zone and casually played catch until it was over. I mean jesus.

The shootout was also horrible as usual but honestly who cares. You shouldn't even get there.

Datsyuk has 0, 27.3, 25, 28.6, 45.5, 50, 50, 50, 40, 50, 50 % shootout conversion rate going back to 05/06 season.

He was ****ing awesome at it for 7 years in a row, and then all of a sudden fell off a ****ing cliff in 12/13. How did that happen? Did he suddenly stop trying? Why? Does this make any sense to anybody?

https://businessofhockey.wordpress.com/2015/01/04/a-deep-look-into-advanced-shootout-statistics/ all of a sudden in the span of ONE offseason he went from consistently 10% over the average, to consistently 10% under the average. What the actual ****?

By the way... the last year he was good at them was also the last year Hudler was around. COINCIDENCE? probably.

I'm done with Sheahan. I'm done with the PP. I'm done with guys getting pushed off the puck left and right.

I thought DeKeyser had a really good, if subtle, game.

Datsyuk stopped caring about the shootout, or he lost his hands for it or a combination of both. He does the exact same move every time and it doesn't work anymore.

seems like he stopped caring for it when he first started having his wrist problems a few years ago

Hmmmmm

I just read all of rule 84 and I can't find your claim. If possible please post the rule number for clarity.

I'm fairly certain that it's not an actual rule. I've never heard of it either. Only that if you pull your goalie in OT for an extra attacker and then get scored on, you then subsequently lose the point. That is the only situation in which that can happen, IIRC.

If you pull your goalie in OT and the other team scores you lose a point.

I don't think subbing him would have an affect on points. What if your goalie gets injured?
That being said, you don't put a cold goalie out there for a shootout, especially when the goalie who was in the game saved 38/40 shots. You would think they would've done it at some point last year when we were like 1-11 in shootouts with Howard.

I only saw bits and piexes of the game because life stuff, but I saw the entire shootout and I am so stuoidly sick if Nyquist and Datsyuk doing the same move every single time. Datsyuk especially because he's so much better than this, and his shot couldn't be less accurate in the shootout.

Just a question regarding last night's game.
Did Ken Daniels broadcast for NBCSN?
Because in this clip it's the shootout. Commentary Ken Daniels and Pierre McGuire inside the glass.
Just curious.

Thought Ken Daniels was Fox Sports Detroit only.
