Hello Svetovy Poharu!

The only stats a I have about 1953 Switzerland is, that Hans-Martin Trepp scored a goal against West Germany.
About West Germany I have that much stats, that Poitsch scored at least 5 goals.
And Markus Egen's total score was: 3+1 (0).
All right, here are the Swedish goalscores from 1953:
Sven "Tumba" Johansson 7
Hans Öberg 4 (+1 against Czechoslovakia)
Ã…ke Andersson 1 (+2 against Czechoslovakia)
Göte Blomqvist 7
Erik Johansson 2
Gösta Johansson 2 (+ 1 against Czechoslovakia)
Stig Karlsson 3
Sigurd Bröms 3
Stig Andersson-Tvilling 2 (+1 against Czechoslovakia)
Hans Andersson-Tvilling 4
Lars Björn (1 against Czechoslovakia)
Gösta Johansson 1
Göte Almqvist 1.
Unfortunately I don't have stats about the games played by goalkeepers.

And here comes the stats of 1965 Team Finland:
Ilkka Mesikämmen 7 0+0 (8)
Matti Keinonen 7 2+0 (0)
Seppo Nikkilä 7 2+0 (2)

All right, here you have them. Just to fill some gaps in my stats, I hope you tell me, if you know anything about the goalscoring of West Germany 1967 in Vienna.

All the best
Jukka

Greetings Jukka!

I have been digging deep into my files and have found all 8 of the 1949 U.S.A. WC boxscores and line-ups. I noticed that you were in need of those particular stats and here they are for you.

1949 USA WC at Stockholm:

C Bruce Mather...................7 gp, 19 + 5 = 24 pts, 0 pim
LW Jack Riley......................7 gp, 7 + 6 = 13 pts, 4 pim
LW Russell "Prince" Johnson...8 gp, 8 + 2 = 10 pts, 0 pim
RW Gerry Kilmartin...............7 gp, 6 + 1 = 7 pts, 12 pim
D Albert Yourkewicz.............8 gp, 4 + 3 = 7 pts, 18 pim
RW Milt "Buzz" Johnson.........8 gp, 3 + 4 = 7 pts, 4 pim
RW Charles Holt...................5 gp, 3 + 3 = 6 pts, 0 pim
C Arthur "Buck" Crouse..........8 gp, 2 + 4 = 6 pts, 2 pim
F Dan Crowley.....................5 gp, 1 + 3 = 4 pts, 0 pim
D Norman Walker..................8 gp, 2 + 0 = 2 pts, 4 pim
D Allan Van.........................7 gp, 2 + 0 = 2 pts, 0 pim
LW Jack Kelley.....................7 gp, 2 + 0 = 2 pts, 0 pim
D William "Bill" Thayer............8 gp, 0 + 1 = 1 pt, 6 pim
C Pat Finnegan....................2 gp, 0 + 0 = 0 pts, 0 pim
G Dick Bittner......................8 gp, 0 + 0 = 0 pts, 0 pim

The U.S. Amateur Hockey Association squad representing the United States at the 1949 world amateur hockey championships at Stockholm also played a total of 35 exhibition matches before and after the WC tournament, in England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, the Netherlands and Sweden. Listed below are the total statistics for those 35 exhibition games and 8 world championship games combined:

Bruce Mather (Springfield, Mass.).....................42 gp (65 + 48 = 113 pts)
Jack Riley (Medford, Mass.).............................39 gp (27 + 51 = 78 pts)
Gerry Kilmartin (Providence, R.I.)......................39 gp (27 + 40 = 67 pts)
Milt "Buzz" Johnson (Webster, S.D.)..................43 gp (11 + 24 = 35 pts)
Art Crouse (West Haven, Conn.).......................42 gp (19 + 15 = 34 pts)
Al Yourkewicz (Brockton, Mass.).......................39 gp ( 9 + 24 = 33 pts)
Charlie Holt (Melrose, Mass.)............................37 gp ( 8 + 25 = 33 pts)
Russ "Prince" Johnson (Grand Forks, N.D.)...........43 gp (25 + 7 = 32 pts)
Jack Kelley (Belmont, Mass.)............................42 gp (11 + 16 = 27 pts)
Dan Crowley (Medford, Mass.)..........................34 gp ( 5 + 17 = 22 pts)
Bill Thayer (Providence, R.I.)............................40 gp ( 5 + 12 = 17 pts)
Pat Finnegan (Eveleth, Minn.)...........................22 gp ( 5 + 10 = 15 pts)
Norm Walker (Scituate, Mass.)..........................38 gp ( 3 + 5 = 8 pts)
Al Van (St. Paul, Minn.)....................................38 gp ( 6 + 1 = 7 pts)
Dick Bittner (New Haven, Conn.)........................43 gp ( 0 + 0 = 0 pts)

Jack Riley, former Dartmouth athlete, was the player-coach of the U.S. team.
Vernon Thomas (assistant to the president of the A.H.A.) of Baltimore, Md., was the team's manager.
John Semple of Lynn, Mass. was the team's trainer.
Albert Yourkewicz, a defenceman, was listed as the team's back-up goalie, even though he never saw action as a goalie during the entire 43 games.
Dan Crowley, was listed as the utility position player.

Jukka, I will look further into my files to see if perhaps I can find the other statistics that you are missing. I have access to the Times of London archives and will try and locate the missing information on Great Britain's hockey teams at the 1924, 1935 and 1938 tournaments. Plus I will check into some other sources for the 1934 USA team stats, and the 1938 and 1949 Canada stats as well.

Hello Jukka,

Regrettably, the Times of London archives is not producing the kind of results I was hoping for. Hockey coverage is very minimal and consists primarily of just line-ups with no mention of goal scorers. I will continue to look into other resources.

Jukka, may I ask if you have any player stats from the 1972 Sapporo Olympics?
I have been searching for quite some time for the 1972 Olympic player stats of Sweden, Finland, Poland, Norway, Japan, Switzerland and Yugoslavia with no success. I do have the stats for Soviet Union, USA, Czechoslovakia and West Germany but that is all I have for those '72 Olympics.

Also, do you have Finland player stats from the 1962 WC at Colorado Springs?
I have found a couple of errors in my Finland stats for that tournament. I am missing a couple of the goal scorers and penalty minute totals.

Many thanks again for your help.

Thank you kindly Jukka for the stats. I do have the rosters of the 1972 Sapporo Olympic teams, just do not have the player stats. The 1972 Olympics is another of those tournaments that I have found great difficulty in finding boxscores and statistics about it.

Thanks for the '62 Finland WC numbers. I had Pentti Hyytiainen listed with 7 gp and 1 goal, 1 assist and that was the big mistake I found.

I will continue to search through my files for 1949 WC Canada totals. Only problem is that I am missing the boxscore from the 47-0 Canada victory over Denmark. The archives only list the goal scorers for that game (no assists or penalty minutes mentioned), so that is the problem I am facing with this. However, I do have the other Canada boxscores from the 1949 WC. So I will continue looking.

The 1924 Olympic games also present a mystery. The newspapers of that time carry telegraph dispatches which contain just the player line-ups. Very limited game
story accounts as well. The 1934 through 1938 WC tournaments seem to offer similar difficulties.

But if I find more details, I will post here for you. Thanks again for your help, Jukka.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Well, I have only goalscorers of Canada vs. Denmark from 1949, without assists and penalties as well. But you can tell the boxscores of the other Canadian games and then later the full list of the Denmark game!

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Thank you very much. So, this team was more like a national team named Sudbury Wolves!

I just noticed, that though the Czechs have excellent statistics available, my only information of team Czechoslovakia 1976 in Innsbruck is, that Jiri Bubla and Eduard Novak scored 1 goal and Ivan Hlinka 3.

So, hopefully you will post the stats of this team!

Hello Jukka,

The 1976 Innsbruck Olympic hockey tournament statistics for the Czechoslovakian team is somewhat confusing. Please let me explain.

If you remember, influenza was widespread throughout the '76 Olympics and as a result, most of the Czechoslovakian team took sick. This would later prove to have a
great effect on the outcome of the tournament for the CZE hockey team.

The Czechoslovaks had beaten Poland 7-1, but defenceman and captain Frantisek Pospisil tested positive for a prohibited substance (flu medicine) after traces of codeine were detected following completion of the CZE-POL game. Because of this positive test finding, the results of the CZE-POL game were reversed and entered into the official records as a 1-0 win for Poland. Officially, the IIHF and IOC list this game as a forfeit. Even though CZE got credited with the loss, Poland did not get the victory counted in the standings. The CZE goals were also deleted from both team's official GF and GA standings. As a sidenote, Pospisil was not disqualified from the tournament by the IOC and was allowed to continue playing.

Plus, each of the 12 hockey teams that participated at the '76 Olympics had to play a qualification game to determine which 6 would play in Group A medal round and the other losing 6 teams would play in Group B. So each team played 5 official games in the tournament, and one qualification game. Czechoslovakia defeated Bulgaria 14-1 in its qualification game. These qualification games are not listed or counted in the official stats.

Here are the Czechoslovakia goal scorers for the combined 6 total games:

F - Vladimir Martinec (7)
F - Milan Novy (7)
F - Jiri Novak (5)
F - Ivan Hlinka (3)
F - Jiri Holik (3)
F - Eduard Novak (3)
D - Frantisek Pospisil (2)
F - Josef Augusta (2)
F - Bohuslav Stastny (2)
F - Jaroslav Pouzar (2)
D - Jiri Bubla (1)
D - Miroslav Dvorak (1)

Total goals scored in 6 gp (38 goals)

Here are the official published IIHF and IOC statistics credited for 4 games played to the 1976 CZE Innsbruck team:

F - Milan Novy.....................4 gp, 5 + 0 = 5 pts, 0 pim
F - Vladimir Martinec.............4 gp, 2 + 3 = 5 pts, 2 pim
F - Ivan Hlinka.....................4 gp, 2 + 2 = 4 pts, 7 pim
D - Frantisek Pospisil.............4 gp, 1 + 3 = 4 pts, 4 pim
F - Eduard Novak..................4 gp, 2 + 1 = 3 pts, 4 pim
D - Oldrich Machac...............4 gp, 0 + 3 = 3 pts, 10 pim
F - Jiri Novak.......................4 gp, 2 + 0 = 2 pts, 0 pim
F - Jiri Holik.........................4 gp, 1 + 1 = 2 pts, 4 pim
D - Jiri Bubla........................4 gp, 0 + 2 = 2 pts, 6 pim
D - Miroslav Dvorak...............4 gp, 0 + 2 = 2 pts, 2 pim
F - Bohuslav Stastny.............4 gp, 1 + 0 = 1 pt, 0 pim
F - Jaroslav Pouzar................4 gp, 1 + 0 = 1 pt, 2 pim
D - Milan Kajkl.......................4 gp, 0 + 1 = 1 pt, 6 pim
F - Bohuslav Ebermann...........4 gp, 0 + 1 = 1 pt, 2 pim
F - Josef Augusta..................4 gp, 0 + 1 = 1 pt, 2 pim
G - Jiri Crha..........................2 gp, 0 + 1 = 1 pt, 0 pim
D - Milan Chalupa..................4 gp, 0 + 0 = 0 pts, 7 pim
G - Jiri Holecek......................4 gp, 0 + 0 = 0 pts, 0 pim

Total goals scored in 4 gp (17 goals)

Goalie stats:
Jiri Holecek.......5 gp, 263 minutes played, 9 goals against (2.05 gaa)
Jiri Crha...........2 gp, 37 minutes played, 1 goal against (1.62 gaa)
Pavol Svitana (emergency third goalie)

Coaches: Karel Gut and Jan Starsi

Well there you have it, Jukka. Are you completely confused? Sorry for the long explanation but as I mentioned, it is a complicated situation concerning the 1976 Czechoslovakian statistics.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

I have gone that much forward looking for Swedish 1972 stats, that when they tied the Sovjets 3-3, Håkan Wickberg and Tord Lundström scored both one goal.

So, hopefully this helps at least a little!

Hello Jukka,

I am currently looking through the 1938 newspaper archives and have found for you the goal scorers for Canada's team represented by the Sudbury Wolves. They embarked on a two-month tour of Europe that included quite a number of exhibition games beginning on 12 January 1938 in Dusseldorf, Germany with a 3-0 victory over the Dusseldorf club (CAN goals by Bruce, Heximer, Chipman).

Here at least are the goal scorers for the 1938 Canada (Sudbury Wolves) for the 7 games played at the WC in Praha:

F - Pearcy Allen (Toronto) 5 goals
F - Gordon Bruce (Ottawa) 3 goals (7 gp, 3 + 2 = 5 pts)
F - Red Chipman (Kirkland Lake, Ont.) 2 goals
D - Johnny Godfrey (Copper Cliff, Ont.) 2 goals
F - Pat McReavy (Copper Cliff, Ont.) 2 goals (7 gp, 2 + 1 = 3 pts)
F - Jimmy Russell (Sudbury, Ont.) 2 goals
F - Roy Heximer (Copper Cliff, Ont.) 1 goal

CAN-SWE 3:2
CAN: Allen (2), Russell (1)

CAN-AUT 3:0
CAN: Russell (1), Allen (1), McReavy (1)

CAN-CZE 3:0
CAN: Allen (1), Bruce (1), Chipman (1)

CAN-GER 3:2
CAN: Allen (1), Bruce (1), Godfrey (1)
GER: Rudi Ball (1), Rudolf Tobien (1)

CAN-HUN 1:1
CAN: Heximer (1)
HUN: Rona (1)

CAN-GER 1:0
CAN: Bruce (1)

CAN-Great Britain 3:1
CAN: Chipman (1), McReavy (1), Godfrey (1)
GBR: Gerry Davey (1)

Jukka, this is what I have found so far. I will keep researching the 1938 archives further to try and find more statistical details.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

I have to say, that you have done a splendid job! At least by my experience, the most difficult stats to find are from the 1920's and the 1930's!

That is the main reason, why I mostly mention only the best scorer/goalscorer on my website!

Jukka,

Yes, you are correct. It is very difficult (at least with my limited resources) to find details on the WC's from the 1920's and 1930's. The North American newspapers of that time did not send any correspondents to Europe to report on the tournaments and instead relied on cable dispatches for coverage, resulting in sparse accounts of game action and statistics.

The ultimate best source to find WC boxscores would most likely be the historical archives of such newspapers as Blick, Basler Zeitung, Sport, Helsingin Sanomat, Dagens Nyheter, Aftonbladet, Expressen, Mlada fronta Dnes, Lidove Noviny, Die Presse, Der Standard or the Kurier. In other words, the host city's newspapers of any particular world championship would be a goldmine of statistical information. As a matter of fact, they may be the only remaining source for these older stats.

Unfortunately, I do not have such access to these newspapers. I just have access to six North American historical newspaper archives (Toronto Globe & Mail, Toronto Star, NY Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
and also The Times of London.

But if I can be of further assistance to you in helping find missing information, please let me know and I will do my best to fill in the blanks.

Hello Jukka,

I have been looking through 1934 newspaper archives for USA goal scorers at the 1934 WC at Milano, Italy. I am missing the lone USA goal scorer in the 8 February 1:0 USA win over Austria. So here is what I have learned about this team.

It was named the Boston Rangers and was chosen on 21 December 1933 by Walter Brown, manager of the team. The American team was composed of eastern U.S. players, many of them were former college stars, and the team played an extensive exhibition schedule prior to and after the world amateur championship in Milano. Exhibition tour games began in Great Britain on 3 January 1934 with a 3:3 draw against the English national team combination of Streatham and Grosvenor House players. In addition to games played in London, the USA team played at Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham as well as Oxford and Cambridge Universities. They also played in Glasgow, Paris, Switzerland, Prague, Vienna and Milano.

The 10-man roster was:
GK: Clem Harnedy (Providence, R.I.) Scarlets Club
DEF: Arthur Smith (Boston, Mass.) Boston
DEF: Edward Keating (Boston, Mass.) University of Alabama
DEF: Peter Bessone (New Bedford, Mass.)
CENTRE: Richard Maley (Philadelphia, Pa.) Hershey
CENTRE: Fred McDonnell (Bosotn, Mass.) Harvard University
LEFT WING: Robert Nilon (Ridgley Par, Pa.) Hershey
LEFT WING: Walter Bender (Boston, Mass.) Boston University
RIGHT WING: Frank Stubbs (New York, N.Y.) Harvard University
RIGHT WING: Robert Jeremiah (Hebron, Maine) Boston

The United States team defeated Italy, 5-0 (2:0, 2:0, 1:0), in an exhibition game on 3 February in Milan. This game was played in conjunction with the opening day of the 1934 World Championships, but did not count in the standings. The US goal scorers were Frank Stubbs with 2 goals in the 1st period, Arthur Smith and Walter Bender in the 2nd, and Walter Bender scoring again in the 3rd period.

Here's the goal scorers from the 4 games the US team played at the 1934 WC:

6 February, USA-CZE 1:0 (0:0, 1:0, 0:0)
USA: Robert Nilon (1)

8 February, USA-AUT 1:0 (1:0, 0:0, 0:0)
USA: ???????????

10 February, USA-GER 3:0 (1:0, 1:0, 1:0)
USA: Peter Bessone (2), Robert Nilon (1)

11 February, CAN-USA 2:1 (0:1, 1:0, 1:0)
CAN: Cliff Lake (1), Jim Dewey (1)
USA: Frank Stubbs (1)

I also noticed you were missing a couple of the goal scorers from the 1934 bronze-medal Germany team. Here are the official stats for Germany at the '34 WC:

D - Gustav Jaenecke (Berliner SC) 8 gp (2 goals)
F - Horst Orbanowski (Berliner SC) 8 gp (2 goals)
F - Hans Lang (SC Riessersee) 8 gp (2 goals)
F - Werner George (SC Charlottenburg) 7 gp (2 goals)

Jukka,

I am missing some Finnish player stats from the 1950's WC's and one player from the 1961 WC. May I please ask of your help? Do you hppen to have any of the below-listed player stats (games played, goals, assists, penalty minutes)? I am missing:

Erkki Koiso and Juhani Lahtinen, 1961 WC at Switzerland.

Jouni Seistamo and Juhani Wahlsten, 1959 WC at Czechoslovakia.

Pasi Vuorinen, 1958 WC at Norway.

Olli Knuutinen, 1957 WC at Sovjet Union.

Lenni Lainesalo, 1955 WC at Germany.

Reino Rautanen and Olli Knuutinen, 1954 WC at Sweden.

Any help you can give me is gratefully appreciated.
Thanks again, Jukka.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Here are my stats of those players:
1961:
Erkki Koiso 6 0+0
Juhani Lahtinen 7 0+0. Unfortunately I don't have stats about games played by goalies of this team.

1959:
Jouni Seistamo 6 2+0
Juhani Wahlsten 8 1+2

1958:
Pasi Vuorinen 6 0+0

1957:
Olli Knuutinen 5 0+0

1955:
Lenni Lainesalo 6 0+0

1954:
Reino Rautanen 3 0+0
Olli Knuutinen 4 0+0

All right, here are the stats I found, no penalty minutes, but games with goals and assists. Hope, it helps you!

All the best
Jukka

Many thanks Jukka for the information.

I am looking through the 1924 newspaper archives and have surprisingly discovered very good game story coverage of the 1924 Olympic hockey tournament. I will try and piece together Great Britain's goal scorers for you.

Already I have found discrepancies regarding Canada's (Toronto Granites) leading goal scorer left-wing Harry E. Watson, who is still the record holder of most goals scored in an
Olympic tournament. Some sources list him as having 36 goals, while others list him with 37 goals. Several sources list him as having scored 13 goals vs Switzerland, 11 vs Czechoslovakia, 6 vs Sweden, 3 vs Great Britain and 3 vs USA for a total of 36. While others have him with 37 goals + 9 assists for 46 points.

There are also differences in goal totals for his linemates: centre Hooley (Reginald) Smith (some have him with 17 goals + 16 assists for 33 points, others with 18 goals), and right-wing Bert McCaffery (some have him with 19 goals + 15 assists for 34 points, others with 20 goals). So I am not certain which source is correct, especially since Canada (Toronto Granites) scored a record 110 goals in just 5 games. Three newspapers have different scoring summaries for the CAN-USA and CAN-CZE games, so the error is contained in one of them or perhaps a goal-scoring change occurred which was not properly addressed in the press.

I will continue investigating the 1924 newspaper files and will post here for you any results I find. Thanks again for your help Jukka.
