Nobody wants a goalie who may never come to NA.

Well yeah, one would think any team that traded for him would've at least made a phone call...perhaps even put a little work into figuring out his intentions...before giving away the kind of value his talent should return. Though there are a lot of incompetent NHL teams, so maybe I'm giving them too much credit.

Admittedly a big part of my lust for Sorokin comes from his relationship with Varly and wanting to see the russian contingent on this team continue grow as we try to woo Shvyryov over as well.

That would explain him staying in russia for now, but it still wouldn't explain why he signed in russia for 3 years. Although the explanation posted on this page about him being able to sign a 1 year ELC after this contract instead of a multi-year ELC, while NYI apparently retains his rights for longer than I thought, does.

The isles should entice him like the Canucks did with tryamkin.

Tryamkin played the final 10 games.or so back in 15-16 to burn year 1 of this 2 year elc. So, he got to be a RFA in summer of 2017.
