They already remade it. It's called Goon and it's basically the same movie with a couple minor tweaks.
Yeah probably would warrant a second watch...might have missed some nuances the first time aroundMore than fair.
That being said, odds are good that if you re-watch it in a few years you'll appreciate it more.
The original Slap Shot is a classic not just because it's a great and funny sports movie, but because of the subtext about the demise of the American Rust Belt in the 1970s and its effect on the psyche of people who lived there. It's a sort of "time capsule" type of movie. Remove that context and the movie is just an okay comedy. I think "Goon" is as close as we're ever going to get to a remake of Slap Shot that's worth watching.
That being said...as far as personality goes, Fleury is a dead ringer for Lemieux.

Youngbloodwho gets Keanu Reeves spot as a goalie?? He didn't get too many lines - if any.

Now imagine if they did a remake of the Godfather...
Don Vito - Sidney Crosby
Michael - Connor McDavid
Sonny - Jack Eichel
Fredo - Mark Borowiecki
Tom Hagen - Allan Walsh
So, you're saying he should play the same small, insignificant character as he did in the original?
The movie is probably ahead of his time. It would be more for old school hockey fans.you are talking about the Paul Newman movie right? Not the Baldwin **** show, right?
If you are talking about the Newman movie--I have to ask-how you a hockey fan?
The movie is a riot
Lol you probably liked the Mighty DucksI have to agree, although I guess if I was born in that generation I might have liked it.
I understand it's a cult classic and its portrayal of hockey culture in the 70s was executed perfectly, but as a 20 something year old it felt dated.
I also obviously couldn't relate with a lot of the old clichés which didn't help.
The "I went to see a fight but a hockey game broke out" cliché... sorry I offended you partner. Rage onFirst of all, what's wrong with a piece of entertainment being "dated?" I don't get why you're offering that up as a reason why the movie isn't good.
Also... what "old clichés" are you talking about? What "cliché" could you not relate to?

My original comment was a little misleading. I liked the movie but felt like I would have understood some of the references a bit better if I lived in that era (another poster mentioned the decline of the rust belt for example, something I didn't really experience).I seem offended? It's just a movie.
Just find it odd that can't enjoy a piece of entertainment if it's from a different era. Can you listen to a Led Zeppelin record?
How is it possible you couldn't relate to "I went t see a fight and a hockey game broke out?"
I'm not offended at all (not sure how you would arrive at such a strange conclusion) but I do find your reasons for dismissing the move downright bizarre.
I enjoy watching older movies. At the present time Hollywood movies are very weak. Not a lot of original material and poor writing. I guess this generation is ok with a new comic book movie every week or another remake. Remakes, sequels and prequels. Remakes of remakes.First of all, what's wrong with a piece of entertainment being "dated?" I don't get why you're offering that up as a reason why the movie isn't good.

You have to keep an open mind when watching a movie that is dated. I'm not saying it is a great movie. I'm talking about any movie.I have to go against the grain and agree with the posts in here that it is a terrible movie. Also it's main plot points are about violent hockey that wouldn't hold up in a modern remake unless it was set in the 70's again.
It's not unwatchable but it deserves maybe about .1% of the praise it gets. Its one of those emperors new clothes situations, people just can't face the fact that something they love is truly terrible. I say own it, admit its terrible but you still love it for what it is. Nothing wrong with that.
Hey now, those of us that have mighty ducks nostalgia are now pushing 30. Slap shot and the mighty ducks don’t hold up.For 10 year olds and under, yup.
