If They Did A Remake of Slap Shot

They already remade it. It's called Goon and it's basically the same movie with a couple minor tweaks.

The original Slap Shot is a classic not just because it's a great and funny sports movie, but because of the subtext about the demise of the American Rust Belt in the 1970s and its effect on the psyche of people who lived there. It's a sort of "time capsule" type of movie. Remove that context and the movie is just an okay comedy. I think "Goon" is as close as we're ever going to get to a remake of Slap Shot that's worth watching.

That being said...as far as personality goes, Fleury is a dead ringer for Lemieux.

It was also a pretty thoughtful critique of violence culture in hockey, and the extent to which pro leagues are willing to offer human sacrifices for profit.

Considering the way the fighting issue played out over the decades, Slap Shot turned out to be surprisingly on-the-nose.

Thanks. Although I've never heard of it I can't imagine there was one decent movie that Hollywood didn't remake or otherwise rip off.

By the way, I was still playing when they made the original Slapshot and I thought it was hilarious.

If they did remake it they need to somehow find a way to fit Bryzgalov in. Could be funny if he's casted as the french goalie. Listening to him try to speak with a fake french accent would be hilarious.

Now imagine if they did a remake of the Godfather...

Don Vito - Sidney Crosby
Michael - Connor McDavid
Sonny - Jack Eichel
Fredo - Mark Borowiecki
Tom Hagen - Allan Walsh

Part II is the greatest movie of all time.

Who plays the young Don Vito in Part II? A young Bobby Orr?

So, you're saying he should play the same small, insignificant character as he did in the original?

OR he could play the SAME character. The movie wouldn’t be a remake per se, but a quasi-sequel “next generation” thing. Bruce would be the same guy who’s now the coach of the Presidents. Also, he’s developed a little bit of a weight problem.

you are talking about the Paul Newman movie right? Not the Baldwin **** show, right?

If you are talking about the Newman movie--I have to ask-how you a hockey fan?

The movie is a riot
The movie is probably ahead of his time. It would be more for old school hockey fans.

I understand it's a cult classic and its portrayal of hockey culture in the 70s was executed perfectly, but as a 20 something year old it felt dated.

I also obviously couldn't relate with a lot of the old clichés which didn't help.

First of all, what's wrong with a piece of entertainment being "dated?" I don't get why you're offering that up as a reason why the movie isn't good.

Also... what "old clichés" are you talking about? What "cliché" could you not relate to?

I seem offended? It's just a movie.

Just find it odd that can't enjoy a piece of entertainment if it's from a different era. Can you listen to a Led Zeppelin record?

How is it possible you couldn't relate to "I went t see a fight and a hockey game broke out?"

I'm not offended at all (not sure how you would arrive at such a strange conclusion) but I do find your reasons for dismissing the move downright bizarre.

My original comment was a little misleading. I liked the movie but felt like I would have understood some of the references a bit better if I lived in that era (another poster mentioned the decline of the rust belt for example, something I didn't really experience).

I didn't mean dated as in it's an old piece of shit movie.

I enjoy watching older movies. At the present time Hollywood movies are very weak. Not a lot of original material and poor writing. I guess this generation is ok with a new comic book movie every week or another remake. Remakes, sequels and prequels. Remakes of remakes.

I have to go against the grain and agree with the posts in here that it is a terrible movie. Also it's main plot points are about violent hockey that wouldn't hold up in a modern remake unless it was set in the 70's again.

It's not unwatchable but it deserves maybe about .1% of the praise it gets. Its one of those emperors new clothes situations, people just can't face the fact that something they love is truly terrible. I say own it, admit its terrible but you still love it for what it is. Nothing wrong with that.

Can't wait until the Casablanca remake where Bogey slides into Bergman's DM.

You have to keep an open mind when watching a movie that is dated. I'm not saying it is a great movie. I'm talking about any movie.
I imagine today's Sci fi fans wouldn't give older Sci fi movies a chance because the effects aren't as good.

Lets set the record straight. Slap shot is a well written and well structured movie. I will be one of the first ones to admit that its not as funny to me as more modern comedies, but i still enjoy it as a film. Ive argued on hockey forums that in terms of pure sports comedy that Goon is much funnier. But humor is also subjective and maybe some dont like the crudeness of it. But yeah Paul Newman is great and its better as a film.
