I was going to give a big breakdown, but it comes down to two words: Alex Pietrangelo

I would rather aim for someone younger using Marner as trade bait.

He hasn't made it to UFA than I can remember

I know Flames resigned him , possibly before his eligible period. I guess I was hoping we'd have a shot, make it be known through back channels or what have you and have a chance to bid on him. It was a few years back, I don't recall the specifics, I just know I thought he'd be a great pickup.

Does he even want to move with three little twins?

Fans always forget these players are people too. It's not only about money and logo on your jersey.
well they have just 2m in cap space with only 21 guys signed.

and i don't see who they could/would be able to move to clear that much cap space.

The concern with moving Marner for Futures and Signing Pietrangelo comes down to our window being shortened significantly. I'd look to move Marner/Willy for younger, yet established options.
Having longer window doesn’t really mean anything. The team is in win now mode.
Maybe 6 yrs from now JT will slow down, both Muzz and Pietra won’t be as good as now, but having guys like Muzz and Pietra, Sandin and Lil become better players. Also maybe by then McDavid signs with the Leafs via Free agency.
I know it is good to look ahead....but the Leafs is in win now mode.

I think the fact they they extended Faulk is a huge indication in regards to Pietra.

Trade Nylander, Johnsson and Kapanen for futures and include Kessel's cap-hit in one of the trades.

This would leave the team with a little over 1.5m to fill out the roster.

Auston Matthews $ 11,634,000
John Tavares $ 11,000,000
Mitchell Marner $ 10,893,000
Alexander Kerfoot $ 3,500,000
Zach Hyman $ 2,250,000
Ilya Mikheyev $ 2,000,000
Kyle Clifford $ 1,800,000
Pierre Engvall $ 1,250,000
Alexander Barabanov $ 925,000
Frederik Gauthier $ 900,000
Nicholas Robertson $ 850,000

Alex Pietrangelo $ 11,000,000
Jake Muzzin $ 5,625,000

I am pretty concerned with spending 10 million on Pie at age 30 with some very tough miles on him. Getting two great D in one off season would be amazing, though.
here is the thing

no "tough miles" =s no PO success=s PO pretender worry

he ticks every single box,,rhsd, big, mean, high IQ,high skill/compete,,full package stud #1D

hell,, there is ONLY 1 guy on this roster that i would not trade 1 v 1 for him

so to get him asset free and then move other guys out to make the cap work and get those assets? hell ya

We gone from having 3 10mil plus players to 4.
Don’t think that will work.

a better plan might to be to dump everyone except Rielly and have age appropriate competent NHL mid level guys replace the AHL caliber D as opposed to trying to find and afford 1 stud D man? Depth top to bottom could be a alternative that might work?

Have to move some talent up front, but I'm okay with that...............

ahhh, hrmmm

Rielly/Pietro
Muzz/
Derm/holl

sandin/lilly

looks damn good to me

oops, I forgot about Muzz! I worry about veteran D men, when they lose a step they become pylons imo. Sandin/Lilly are unknown quantities at this point, want success.........the less questions the better imo.

I just showed how it works in a flat cap. The trick is moving nearly 14m (Nylander/Kap/Johnsson) without taking any cap back.

I think only NJ, Ottawa and Los Angeles could afford to swallow Nylander's contract. NJ even has 3 1st round picks this year.

In the longer term we lose Hyman and Andersen and reallocate that money into Rielly. The core of Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Pietrangelo, and Rielly could be maintained.

Where it gets scary is not being able to afford to re-sign Campbell after 2 seasons. We'd be hanging our hats on Ian Scott or Joseph Woll developing.

sandin/lilly are our 7/8s

every teams 7/8 are either unknown or known and are kinda crap,,,that is why they are 7/8s

either kinda crap or young and breaking in.

On paper it works but like you said, the cap problem will still exist.
Personally if Pietra is coming in, Marner is gone. There is no way around it. Based on your projection, the defense is better( at least the top 4) but the forward takes a huge hit. Trading Marner and signing Pietra is pretty much a one for one trade.

Time to build around the centers and the defence.

Mikheyev Matthews Nylander
Robertson Tavares Hyman
Korshkov Kerfoot Kapanen
Clifford Engvall Simmons
Spezza

Rielly Pietrangelo
Muzzin Manson
Dermott Holl
Sandin Liljegren

Andersen
Campbell

You telling me this team doesn't have enough wingers to still be a scoring threat and make a deal for Manson on a rebuilding team?

Marner Johnsson Gauthier Barabanov Bracco Brooks Malgin Petan Agostino Aberg

Dubas has no excuse.

Hindsight.... But should have done that rumoured Nylander for Pietrangelo deal in 2018 if that was ever on the table. His defence would have made a difference with better success, than keeping Nylander.
