I like what I see from Nathan Beaulieu

I have a hard time understanding how people can already be jumping to conclusions about Beaulieu not reaching his potential. He's barely limited minutes in 8 NHL games. Get back to me after 50.

He's going to be good because of all the natural talent that he has. However, he hasn't looked very good so far this season and definitely needs a year in Hamilton. He's been a defensive liability and looks much more tentative than last season. I like him in the lineup because he can play 2nd unit PP... that's about it right now. I'd rather have Tinordi who can play better defense and play the PK - until Murray or Emelin make their return.

Beaulieu always had issues with decision-making, esp. when he is without the puck or in the defensive zone. The comments made about the risk in achieving his potential has nothing at all to do with 8 games played, we all realize that is a ridiculously low small sample size. It's just based on his mental game, it's been his albatross.

If you want to be taken seriously, never quote Hockey's Future talent analysis. You should know this by now.

I don't know what you're inferring. Pronman is not the only writer who has made similar observations. I just thought he encapsulated what others have been saying. Doesn't mean I only rely on one source or that he should be lambasted even when his comments are on point.

Hockey Prospectus' take on Beaulieu:

Reflects what a lot of posters here have stated. He has the tools and age is on his side, however, it's a risky proposition to believe that he's going to achieve his full potential. He needs to be more than an offensive specialist -- I'd rather see him play with Hamilton for as long as it takes, even 3-4 years, unless it becomes evident that his decision-making skills show no sign of tangible improvement.

That's a very good assessment.

The good news about the bad is that the Habs seem to have strong group of development people and they are willing to be patient with him. On some teams he'd be "learning on the fly" in the NHL which is not a good thing for a lot of kids.

Thanks Moncton.

I'm encouraged by the quality of the development staff and how they've handled Beaulieu.

He outplayed Tinordi in their few games BOTH offensively and defensively. Beaulieu looks very confident. A bit too much at times but he looks a lot like Subban in his first year.

Offensively: Yes

Defensively: No.

don't follow the habs much, but what is beaulieu's expected ceiling?

Very high potential. Not the brightest or most mature guy, so not sure if he's ever gonna reach that. If he reaches it, I'd say a poor man's Subban, and if not then a #4, PP specialist + puck mover.

Good to see you're just as crotchety as ever Habs. ;)

I'm the one constant you can count on around here!

I think he has Ron Hainsey upside, maybe a bit higher

I remember Hainsey as a rookie and Beaulieu is way better! And today Hainsey was a free agent nobody wanted until Pitkanen got hurt.

I would say his upside is something like Paul Martin or Visnovsky.

Thought he really struggled in his own end but then again imo he should be in the AHL, it's too bad the injuries have already piled up as I would prefer to see him getting a ton of ice time in Hamilton as imo he needs a lot of work on his defensive zone play.
