The reactions are gold!

It was a freaking gamble that didn't work, there was like a 5/10 % that they don't match.

Why is everybody so angry? geez...
Because some people don't understand the concept of trying. It's either it's done or it's half assed, PR move, fake attempt. If we were serious we would have added 2mil, because 10.5 is the magic number, just don't ask why.

They will not trade him, MB move on

They can't trade him. Not for a year. They can save a ****load of money and save face by negotiating for more.

Aho is worth an awful lot more that those 3 draft picks to the Habs. Sweeten the pot. Aho is the golden egg of the UFAs.

Digging the hole deeper by mentioning giving marc respect lol
It's pretty obvious that Aho is not happy, his agent is doing the dirty work so if Carolina matches then Aho is publicly okay with the fans. But the agent is stirring the pot Canes management knows this will be his last contract with them and possible ask for a trade. Hell he can walk away with half his earnings after a year and go play Euro for a little bit if he really wants to stiff them.

Back to the real world for a minute.

Aho and agent tell MB they're good with 8.5.

Bergy goes 10.5 and two more first rounders.

Carolina matches.

Word of 8.5 was enough gets out later.

No Aho to Montreal, and the overpay goes public.

Would this be embarrassing, or no?

Imo the best scenario is Mtl offering 8,5 and not 10,5.

It only proves that the Canes were lowballing him and it will hurt their relation with Aho and his agent. He didn't even hesitate to accept a rly reasonable contract. I don't think the AAV would've been that much of a deal for them. They woulda match an offer of 10,5 anyway.

I'm not sure it's ''that easy'' for them to match the offer with all the bonuses. It's still a alot of money and if some of their key players get injured and they miss the playoff... They might be losing a tone of money next year. Carolina is not a real hockey market, if they start losing it will hurt greatly.

In the end, this whole OS situation could make things more difficult for Bergevin when he will negotiate with the other GM. But I honestly think it showed some weakness on the Hurricanes side. So much drama from their side and alot of useless talking... Just match the offer if you think you can, don't talk about how ''easy'' it is to match it.

Québec will thank M.B. on that one.

Waddel said "doesnt throw any wrinkles in the planning, in fact it works out better"....

How in the hell is that better? Straight up lie. Mtl made that contract design specifically to choke out the Canes. If the canes negotiated this deal, they couldve afforded it... But not as a front load payout plus all the other things discussed + things we dont know about that are on the contract that arent made public.

If hes lying about this, which he clearly is, really makes you wonder what else theyre hiding/lying from us. Imo They're just stalling trying to find ways to back up their original stance and sign him.. Even if they lose a ton of money from their pockets the next two years.
I think they truly cant afford to operate at a loss for the next 2 years straight especially if a lockout happens so theyre stalling trying to smokescreen MB into offering more so its palatable to their fans
