STRONG START

The Checkers have roared out of the gates, sitting atop the AHL in terms of points percentage. At 8-1-0-0, the Checkers are off to the AHL’s best start since the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins hit the same mark through nine games in 2015-16.
Dating back to last season the Checkers are 17-1-1 in their last 19 regular-season games.
BEAN BREAKS THROUGH
The Hurricanes’ 13th overall pick in 2016 notched his first pro goal Friday in Binghamton, sniping a shot past NHL veteran Corey Schneider in overtime. Bean scored again the next night in Syracuse as part of his three-point effort to run his total to five points in three games, tying him for second in the AHL last week.
Bean is now tied for third in scoring among rookie defensemen.
Ranks
  • Andrew Poturalski is tied for 10th in the league in points (11) and tied for fourth in assists (9)
  • Janne Kuokkanen is tied for second in the AHL in power-play goals (4)
  • Clark Bishop is tied for the league lead in shorthanded assists (2) and points (2)
  • Alex Nedeljkovic leads the league in wins (6), ranks fourth in minutes (419:13) and ranks 12th in goals-against average
  • Morgan Geekie is tied for the lead among AHL rookies in shootout-winning goals (1)
  • Trevor Carrick is tied for fourth in the AHL and second among defensemen in power-play assists (5)

He's 4 years post draft after this year isn't he? Can't he go UFA already after this year? That's what Justin Schultz did I believe.
Drafted in 2016. He started his third year, can be draft-related UFA August 16th, 2020. Bad year to be UFA I'd think; signing up with Canes in the spring of 2019-20 season to burn ELC may be a smart option.

Schultz happened under the previous CBA.

Cotton was drafted 2015.

Damnit. I guess that makes the Schultz scenario possible.

Cotton either became college student prior June 1st, 2016, or Canes gave him a bona fide offer for ELC as per CBA 8.6 (c)(iii), because Canes still has his rights.

(i) or (iii): If he stays in school at least until Jan 1st, 2020, Canes have his rights until August 15th, 2020.

(ii): If he ditches the college before Jan 1st 2020, then Canes apparently will have his rights until June 1st, 2019 or until 30 days after the notification to the Central Registry, whichever is later.

After that I guess he will become a draft-related UFA, but is still subject to Entry-Level system and a 2 year ELC. Signing with the Canes in the spring 2019 or 2020 would allow him to burn a year off it instantly, which may be a consideration.

CBA 8.6 (c) College Players.

(i) If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at the time
of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide college student
prior to the first June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, and
remains a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college
class, his drafting Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for
his services through and including the August 15 following the graduation
of his college class.
The Club need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such
Player to retain such rights.

(ii) If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at the time
of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide college student
prior to the first June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, and does
not remain a bona fide college student through the graduation of his
college class, his drafting Club shall retain exclusive rights for the
negotiation of his services until the later of:
(a) the fourth June 1 following
his selection in the Entry Draft, or (b) thirty (30) days after NHL Central
Registry receives notice that the Player is no longer a bona fide college
student; provided that if the Player ceases to be a bona fide college student
on or after January 1 of an academic year and the Player: (1) is in his
fourth year of college and has commenced his fourth year of NCAA
eligibility, or (2) is in his fourth year of college and is scheduled to
graduate from college at the end of his fourth year, then in the
circumstances described in (1) or (2), the Club shall retain the exclusive
right of negotiation for such Player's services through and including the
August 15 following the date on which he ceases to be a bona fide college
student. The Club need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such Player to
retain such rights.

(iii) If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19, who had received a Bona Fide Offer in
accordance with Section 8.6(a)(ii) above, becomes a bona fide college
student prior to the second June 1 following his selection in the Entry
Draft and remains a bona fide college student through the graduation of
his college class, his drafting Club shall retain the exclusive rights of
negotiation for his services through and including the August 15 following
the graduation of his college class.

Before his good games this year he was probably ranked in the maybe/maybe not get a contract offer category. A few games likely doesn’t change too much for anyone. Until we hear buzz from other directions there’s no reason to think he won’t be thankful the Canes give him a chance and jump at the opportunity to play for us.

If it wasn’t mentioned here I wouldn’t have heard anything about it.
