The duck season started on 20th, it's the first Saturday of the season, the clock is 10 pm, and shotguns are going off rapid fire somewhere nearby.

Also don't tell anyone but I'm a bit stressed out. I'm waiting for a slam dunk resolution to come out from the administrative court that's gonna set the balls moving and maybe to the wall, but they sure are taking their time with it.

Just waded through the entire "Nylander/Leafs not close on a contract" thread on the main trade board. There were all these arguments about what Nylander would sign for and what the team was looking for and potential offer sheets and how none of that would happen and.....well you get the picture. Typical TML trade thread.

What nobody really addressed was Toronto's salary cap situation. Personally, I don't see anyway that Nylander (or maybe Marner) is on that team at the beginning of next season. The math just doesn't work out....especially if they want a solid Top 4 defender.

Waddell can easily find himself in the same situation in a few years if he's not careful.. $6mil+ contracts to Aho, TT, Necas, Svech, Staal, Hamilton. Unless our goalies start playing for free, it's gonna get tight quick.

Also apparently the shotguns were fireworks, to celebrate the ending of the summer vacation season, I'm told by the wife.

It does make sense because it's too dark for duck-hunting, but damn in the mental image of Saturday night duck-hunting didn't speak to me. Everyone would not be particularly sober for it.

Things would be a lot easier for them if Matthews was signing a contract first. If a team was planning ahead, they should offersheet Nylander a sheet that was a good contract a bit on the high side, but one TML would sign. Then next year really go after Matthews. Put TML in a situation where matching hurts and forces a loss of Marner or Nylander. Marner and Nylander aren't worth four 1sts, but Matthews is if he is the last piece on a team deep with prospects already in the system and young.

I mean, if you look at the team make-up and their salaries, paying Nylander $6.5 million to $6.75 million really, really puts them in a bind....and there's almost certainly going to be no increase in salary cap until after the new CBA. But your point is well taken. Personally, I'd get Aho done and then drop a sheet on Nylander for $6.75 for 6 years. If the Leafs accepted that deal, then great! They really can't do both Nylander and a competent Top 4 defender.

Actually, the real issue only happens in 19-20....things easy up after that. Assuming that we re-sign Aho and Teravainen for about $14 million between them and add a forward like a Nylander for $6.75 million, we'd have 15 guys signed for about $66.5 million. Ultimately we'd probably have to spend to within $3 or $4 million of the cap that season.

Truth be told, as we become more competitive, I'd expect us to spend to that level anyway. Once we are in a position to extend Svechnikov and Necas, we don't know what the make up of the team will be. It is one of the reasons that it is so important to have depth.

I look forward to the day the Canes find themselves in the same situation.

So do I....so do I....

40.5M divided per lesser of the full term or 5 will be 8.1M, meaning compensation of two 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd.

Actually it is a 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd.
You seem to be right, apparently that's the going price in 2018 for $6,088,981 - $8,118,641.

I looked it up from CBA, and didn't expect the yearly increase to push the original upper limit of $6,728,781 for 1-2-3 so high.

You crafty bastard didn't choose $8.1M AAV by accident I see.
