Another Scherbak. The Habs lost Rychel. Rychel didn't even crack the Flames lineup this year despite having a very good AHL season this year. So no big loss. Shinkaruk was very disappointing point wise this year. That's MB for you, expecting to win with reclaimed projects.

It's funny that our scouts liked all the busts from those draft years, it was reported that we liked Lazar/Rychel/Poirier and we ended up picking McCarron and DLR with our picks (and traded for Shinkaruk), following year we picked Scherbak .

Theodore ended up going right after McCarron.. boy could we use him right now. When your scouting staff fails you, you end up drafting an AHLer instead of a top pairing dman.

Drafting is a hit or miss. All the teams have drafted players that busted. Montreal has an abysmal track record for the last decades. It won't change because the organisation doesn't want to move on from their glorious past, won't cut ties with old friends and focus towards the future. They have become a brand.

Other teams are amongst the best. Many players have been drafted in later rounds and became superstars with their respective clubs. So, nobody can predict how good a drafted player will become.

It all comes down to the player's attitude and team personnel. The last few years, the NHL is becoming more offensive minded, less physical, so younger talented players are given all the opportunities to show their talent.

Generational players are a dime a dozen. You can draft one by getting a top 3 pick and even then, the player can still bust.

Unfortunately that's their job, it is also their job to assess a players attitude/work ethic/drive. So I hold the scouting staff fully responsible for targeting players like Lazar/Rychel/Poirier/McCarron/DLR/Scherbak/Crisp etc. The funny part here is they managed to pick out every single terrible player from those draft years.

Well like I said previously, the Habs don't necessarily have the right people in place to take good decisions. What I mean by that is old friends still run the show. You can change coaches and GMs but if you still have your old buddies in your circle, then you can't progress. The organization can't adapt to the new NHL and those drafted players are not given opportunities to develop and are not necessarily well surrounded. The philosophy has always been to build around a spectacular goalie since the Dryden years: Roy, Theodore, Hackett, Huet, Halak and eventually Price came after.

The organization seems to have learned from past blunders and is likely turning the page although all these upcoming youngsters have not proven anything yet in the NHL. One thing that won't change though is that as long as MB is calling the shots, expect many reclaimed busts. This guy loves to go after underachievers by trading away his own or late picks and even signing a few, hoping for miracles.

That's the MB brand and thus the popular nicknames of BargainBin or WaiverBin. He got lucky last season with Tatar, Kulak and Domi. I can also add Byron. Shaw rebounced. However, he has done more harm to this team going after bottom players.

Rychel for Shinkaruk, and people are complaining..... Both are as useless as the other.
