lol the options aren't even really realistic? If your Gardiners agent, do you let him sign a 7 year deal at 3.5? Not a chance.

John Carlson got a 6 year deal at 3.96 per, I think its a good comparable. Carlson was better at the time, imo, but due to the cap going up, I think a similar deal could work.

I suggest that whoever chose the 2nd option should also include what drugs they were on to even think the Leafs could get Gardiner at 7 years/3.5-4 AAV.

No bridge deal. I bet MTL wishes they got Subban at 5.5M 2 years ago instead of the 8+ it will cost them now

the problem was when i first created the poll i forgot to include the 5yr so a few people prob choose the 7 because it is better then 2.

I think it's closer to 50/50 TBH

Gardiner is the MAN! He is by far the #1 future D man for the Leafs. The kid is a stud. I like Reilly and believe he is very good... but not as good as Gardiner.

Give him a 7 year contract.

I wish he would sign for that 5 yr or 7 year deal you listed, IMO I'd sign him for 6 years at 4.25mil and hope he signs it. Guys a stud that can play 25mins a game.

I only picked the 7 year one because it was a no brainer, Gardiner wouldnt take a 7-8 year deal that wasn't closer to 5 million. If we could lock up his potential at under 4 million for 7 years, it would be a steal. You don't get skaters like him that often, I feel very lucky to be able to have Gardiner's raw ability on the team and to see him develop. I believe the future will end up being him and Rielly. Phaneuf is priced appropriately for what he has done in his career but the younger talents will push him out of the equation since he is the internal benchmark. I worry a little about the price of our defense in the future a little bit but it's pretty fun to watch!

As others have said, the dollar values on the contracts in the poll are far too optimistic.

I'd push for 4.5m to 5m AAV over 7 years. Good balance of guaranteed money for Jake and risk/reward for the team.

Everyone seems to be loving the 5 year option, but I don't like it. I think in a vacuum the contract itself is the sweet spot, but it's not eating enough UFA years. Either keep him under control with a bridge deal, or get him locked up for 6 or more. that's my take anyway.

Because this is a fantasy. I selected the low range 3, 3.5m x 5. Easy on cap and lots of time. The savings alone of 1m a year over 5yrs is enough to almost pay for a 6th and part of a 7th year and enough to employ a young Nylander.

And if we were talking about Subban, I'd be all over a long term contract.

Since we're talking about Jake, though, I'd prefer a bridge deal until he can figure out his defensive game. A JVR type deal wouldn't cripple us too much, I guess, should Jake's defensive game remain full of holes (as I suspect it will). You could still justify that contract for a 3rd pairing/PP specialist guy.
