How long do you want Gardiner signed?

With Reimer signed the Leafs have ~5m in cap space so the question needs to be asked, do you think the Leafs will go short length low hit or long term with higher AAV?

This isn't so much price but length as I am guessing at prices.

We didn't draft Kessel yet we signed him for 8 years. I think the rule is if it's your own player the max term is 8 years and 7 if not.

8 years has nothing to do with drafting. You can RESIGN any player to an 8 year deal

Yeah, would definitely prefer to go longer. Bridge deal sounds nice until then you really have to pay out for the next one. Have some faith of where Gardiner will turn out so go for the long term.

I have to agree mainly because I am not sure of the type of defender he will mature into. Rielly on the other hand if we can get him on a 8yr cap friendly AAV that would be amazing but I don't think Rielly's agent will allow that.

At least have realistic options.

If signing for 8 years, he will likely get 6mil.
If signing for 5 years, he will likely get 4mil+.
If signing for 3 years, he will likely get 3.5mil.
