Everyone knows that the defensive lineup we are stuck with isn't very good. The problem as I see it is fixing it isn't going to be easy.
JJ & Tyutin are both signed for the next 2 seasons at a cap hit of between 4 & 4.5. Either may be movable at the TDL but it isn't a sure bet they would bring a 1st rounder or a really good prospect and we sure don't want ta contract unless it is expiring.
Savard is signed for the 5 years at 4.25 per. As a 3-4 he is probably all right.
Murray needs to be resigned and I figure because of his injury history he goes for a 2 yr for no more than 2 a year and hopefully less. He still has all the potential to be a top 4 guy and hopefully a top 2 and for 2 more years will be affordable.
Golbuef has one more year at 750k. A very affordable serviceable guy for next year.
So that is 5 guys who look like they will be here next year and probably for the next two.
Luckily Prout and Connauton are RFA's after this year. I say they go but if they stay it has to be on 2 ways.
Werenski may or not be signed for next year and may or may not be NHL ready.
When I factor i expected raises for Jenner and Murray assuming the cap rises 3% we will have $4 million to sign 2 defensemen; if it rises 5% we will have 5.5.
Neither of those amounts allow us to sign 2 quality guys. Nor do they allow for one stud and a lesser light.
UFA's that look attractive to me include Kris Russell & Jared Spurgeon.
Maybe we could get lucky and sign one of them and limp along with a cheap 7th guy.

All in all vastly improving our D in the short term is going to be pretty difficult-which may be the reason Jarmo hasn't done it already.
Viable solutions to me include:
Trading Cam for a pick at the deadline - frees up 3.5
Buyout Boll and Campbell -saves 2 million of cap
That brings the available cap up to 9.5 to 11 million.
Ship out either Tyutin or JJ at the deadline for picks - frees up another 4 plus and would give us a ton to spend on a top UFA or 2 when added to the money that would be freed up by the above moves.
Sign a decent UFA and pray that Werenski signs and is NHL ready.
In any case unless the team turns it around at the deadline I think dumping contracts at the deadline is imperative and adding a top 4 free agent acquisition is also top priority.
Trading for a top D man is very unlikely in my opinion unless we definitely overpay and even then I don't see it as being very likely.
So how would you fix it?
