This Maple Leaf team is STACKED with talent. However, Babcock refuses to let them play to their strengths. Case in point, he states in his post game scrum that he is going to move the Mathews line around for tomorrow’s game because of matchups, despite his line scoring both goals tonight. Why? His mentality is that of an old style coach, defensive, slow, and heavy. He has the players to outscore and create chances, but he won’t let them play that way because he wants to chase the matchup, which doesn’t allow for any flow with the lines. That’s why a player like Mathews only plays 18 minutes most nights under Babcock. Also, this coach has proven he has zero creativity when it comes to power play strategy, despite having some of the leagues most creative players.
Babcock is a good coach, just not the right one for this team.

What do you mean "look at this roster"?

What does this mean?

Just because YOU fall in love with the names on the roster doesn't mean anyone else does.

That's all you and you've clearly already set yourself up for disappointment.

This is the most talented Leafs team for decades

We have two 1C a genuine 1D and one of the best goaltenders in the league and outstanding winger depth
Management can't do any more to set Babcock up for success, he has to coach this team to its strengths or he's not the right coach for this group of players

No excuses

If you watched the game, what were your thoughts when the Wing ran over Freddy and no one even looked at the guy. That’s not the first time that happened either. Are they told not to stick up for one another? Seems proposterous.

How can he win with guys like that?

By playing an up tempo game, by actually getting his PP functioning and by stoping lamenting what he doesn't have

I don't care who the coach is, nobody sane should turn over a roster to make the ******* coach happy

He has assistants ...if he isn't as stubborn as it appears ,he will figure it out...he isn't the reason they are not great,he won't be the reason they are... the players need to execute...that game tonite was fukin embarassing!

Are you talking about winning a game in Feb or winning in the playoffs?
Can you imagine watching this team take a deep run in the playoffs without throwing a body check?

They'll qualify because theres too much firepower and Andersen always goes on a run late in the season but his forced limited amount of plays makes the leafs too easy to play against.

I hope so...but they look bad. Do not look like a playoff team at all. Almost as if the team has tuned Babcock out.

Because we have
Marner, Matthews, Nylander, Tavares, Kadri, Rielly, Muzzin, Andersen, Kapanen for a start

You don't have to be a champion talent evaluator to know that lot shouldn't be this bad

How many of those players can actually maintain a forecheck and a cycle? Not sure if you've notice but that's a key weakness in this team.

You say "danglez" and "cellys" ..... I say hit, forecheck, cycle, and push-back.

You're obviously blinded by skill and not by work ethic.

What do people want from this team and Babcock this year? Is it a win in the first round against the Bruins ? Is it conference finals? The cup?
Our two very best players are still on their elc. At the very least Babcock is trying to grow these kids into a team that can beat the Bruins and then take it from there.
We criticize the sports journalists like Simmons for their hysteria but ultimately it is our own short sightedness that allows it to happen.
I hope this fan base and the journalists that feed off of it don’t chase Babcock out of here if we fall short of automatic grandeur.

What about the supporig cast?

Zaitsev, Gardiner, Dermott, Hainsey.and Rielly don’t hardly strike fear in the forecheckers

This is a fast skilled team, there not going to hit and be successful, were not built that way and to coach them like that would be pure insanity

This team can win if we institute a game plan and system that plays to our strengths and gets the kids to buy in, rather than ask them to be something they are not

Shanny identified an up and comer to groom for GM.

Shanny we need you again. Who sees the game from behind the bench like few others? Who is waiting to be scooped up?

Take the next step. Fire an assistant and get some new blood. Sadly it will be next season at the earliest.

The core is still young. Hire the heir apparent in the offseason. Groom him for a year. 2021-22 is not too late with this young core for a new head coach with fresh ideas.

This team would do well in ball-hockey and girls hockey, I'll say that much.

We're not the LA Kings and to expect us to play That way is lunacy, how about we try playing like the Lightning instead who are built like us and have been deep in the playoffs?

The teams not working hard enough you say? That sounds like a coaching issue then doesn't it

Pretty good when you consider what that supporting cast is built around

Unfortunately this isn’t baskellasetball. It’s a physical game that requires a unique physical talent.

Half the team can handle the puck.
