I hate to be this person, but it wasn’t improbable to people who watched Hertl play, especially after the playoffs he had against Vegas. I said a hundred times that with a little finish, Hertl could be a 70 point two-way center. And given that it wasn’t like he had stone hands, him developing finish wasn’t out of reason.

His puck handling is better this year too. He doesn't constantly lose the puck when he's deking into the slot anymore.

For what's it is worth, Maladroit's argument was procedurally sound. Hertl's improvement was improbable, so crowing about this contract send tinged with outcome bias.

Barring injury *knocks on wood* this was a steal of a deal. Hertl is quickly becoming one of the best two way forwards in the NHL.

He’s dominant in possession and he’s found his scoring touch which appears to be based on his seemingly outrageous shooting percentage of 21.2, but when you look at his shot selection his percentage is only slightly elevated because he is getting most of his opportunities within 10 feet.
