also, i am sure messier can make tough personnel decisions, but nobody will let him near a gm position.

Not to derail the discussion but that's probably because Messier is unwilling to apprentice and he's probably selective in where he's willing to go (likely only NYR). It's like Pierre McGuire waiting for a GM job to come to him except that he's at least involved in the game.

I think the Sedins are going about things intelligently. They know that if they wanted to pursue this they shouldn't spend too much time away from the game. It's not too different from how Luongo and Yzerman went about things. The Sedins, being Canucks royalty, obviously have doors open for them and they are taking advantage to learn the trade without pressure.
