I gave up early in the season during the first "collapse" which people were saying was a continuation of the collapse from last season.
When that article came out about "No lifeboats for Carlyle/Nonis from Shanahan" or whatever, where the groundwork was laid out that Shanahan was putting his plans on hold until 2015 when he would get a chance to talk to Mike Babcock and see if there was a fit.
I'm not stupid, I don't think for a second that Shanahan isn't able to have some sort of conversation, maybe in a parking lot at night with headlights on so you can't see it's Shanny, and talk to Babcock to have some sort of clear idea whether this will happen.
So the decision to re-sign Carlyle, instead of a new coach for a new direction, was a clear indication that Shanahan was putting scotch tape on this Titanic to just keep it afloat long enough that the casualties would be minimal (i.e. Carlyle, Nonis, and a few jerseys).
So I would be quite surprised at this point if we see a guy like Kessel or Phaneuf traded at the deadline, unless it's clear overpayment. I'm a little surprised that they're considering trading Franson, since he's a rare commodity and the Leafs don't really have a replacement for him, specifically a good RHD puckmoving PP specialist. But who knows, could just be a casualty of the cap.
So 2014-15 was clearly always intended to be exactly what it has become. They knew it would fail and it failed. The 2015 off-season will bring a major re-structuring, both of the roster, and the coaching, and the GM. Up-and-down throughout the organization.
I'm not promising Babcock will want to come here, but I know that this is what Shanahan wants to find out before he does anything else.
