Have you given up for 2015?

If done right, it shouldn't take that long. Should it? I am willing to concede next season as well as a lost cause, but beyond that? They should be on the upswing.

I'm in this camp but will have patience if it does take longer. I know that where you were drafted doesn't mean everything, but we have 10 guys in the system that are 25 and under that we're drafted in the first round. Four of which were drafted top ten. We also have a 26 YO tender drafted 11th OA. Add to that our picks from 2016 and 2017, both of which should be top 5-10. Another 4 or 5 1sts and/or former firsts acquired in trades. Not to mention the guys in our system not drafted high like Brown, Leivo,Valiev and the Swedes.

Again, not that draft position is he be all and end all, I'm just trying to prove that the cupboards aren't dry and that we won't be starting from scratch.

"Given up" isn't the right term.

I would classify 2015 as a great success. The team is tanking, we should get a really high draft pick, and all indications are Dion Phanuef will be sent packing sometime this year.

2015 is going pretty well for the intelligent Leaf fan.

Do you think we still have a shot at the wildcard at this stage in the season (13 point differential) or have you given up?
...I honestly gave up on this team at the end of last year as far as making the playoffs is concerned. So this year held no surprises for me. "If" they are on the right track starting with last years draft and "if" the previous drafts provide some depth and "if" this year's and next year's drafts pan out then and only then will be on the path to respectability.Maybe 2016-2017 will be the start of some optimism....Being a fan of this team for 57 years the last 47 of which have been mostly a s*** show I am not holding my breath.

Actually the "intelligent Leaf fan" would say this has the opportunity to go "pretty well" but history suggests it will go pretty poorly and underwhelming.

I gave up early in the season during the first "collapse" which people were saying was a continuation of the collapse from last season.

When that article came out about "No lifeboats for Carlyle/Nonis from Shanahan" or whatever, where the groundwork was laid out that Shanahan was putting his plans on hold until 2015 when he would get a chance to talk to Mike Babcock and see if there was a fit.

I'm not stupid, I don't think for a second that Shanahan isn't able to have some sort of conversation, maybe in a parking lot at night with headlights on so you can't see it's Shanny, and talk to Babcock to have some sort of clear idea whether this will happen.

So the decision to re-sign Carlyle, instead of a new coach for a new direction, was a clear indication that Shanahan was putting scotch tape on this Titanic to just keep it afloat long enough that the casualties would be minimal (i.e. Carlyle, Nonis, and a few jerseys).

So I would be quite surprised at this point if we see a guy like Kessel or Phaneuf traded at the deadline, unless it's clear overpayment. I'm a little surprised that they're considering trading Franson, since he's a rare commodity and the Leafs don't really have a replacement for him, specifically a good RHD puckmoving PP specialist. But who knows, could just be a casualty of the cap.

So 2014-15 was clearly always intended to be exactly what it has become. They knew it would fail and it failed. The 2015 off-season will bring a major re-structuring, both of the roster, and the coaching, and the GM. Up-and-down throughout the organization.

I'm not promising Babcock will want to come here, but I know that this is what Shanahan wants to find out before he does anything else.

Playoffs? What's that?

The rest of the season should be a trial for the young players to get more ice time and play for a role on the team next year.

isn't tanking part of the rebuild? I thought we figured that out a month ago.

Its the only option with the cards we have.

Why would any established coach want to come here if you guys are saying that the next few years are a write off? If they get a rookie coach, then I know the plan is to suck for a few seasons. If they hire an established coach, then I know the plan is to compete sooner rather than later.

they need about 45 points in 30 games, so they have to go 22-3-3, or 20-5-5, that's not likely, it's not over until the fat lady sings, but she's warming up.

it's not trolling to understand how chance works

Leafs have gone on streaks before like year of the Reimer

Playing near .900 hockey isn't a hot streak. It's the hottest streak of all time.

We currently have half the points needed to make the playoffs in 52 games.

In 30 more games we need the exact same amount of points we have in 52 games.

The "no" crowd is trolling.

Of course not. If we focus hard, play consistently and the stars align, we'll get a better chance at McDavid! There's always hope!

At this point, the playoffs shouldn't even be in consideration, and we should be solely focused on doing everything possible so that we can get the best pick possible.
