You must've taken that from your own head, because the USSR won the bronze in 1980. The US beat them in the semi-finals.

It didn't work that way back then. It was a "medal round" but not a semi finals and finals, with a gold and bronze medal game as it is today.

Well since you bring it up, which country has won the most Gold medals in hockey.....Could it be CANADA with 9 Golds,

fair enough, fair enough.

I suppose I felt the OP was referring to Canada's more recent performance.

As far as olympic sports dominance, I dont know how many golds in Diving China has won with illegal underfed 11 year old girls, but its hard to make a splash when you weigh 65 pounds.

Lame excuse to cover up the fact that the USSR was once the best team in the world for several several years.

Well if you're happy to claim to be the best when some country doesn't send their best players. Good for you. We'll have a world football tourny not invite the U S and the winner can claim to be the best. Means about the same thing.

Yup, it became a 2nd round-robin with the points carrying over from the prelims. In the prelims, US and Sweden tied so they each started the medal round with 1 point. USSR beat Finland, so they started with 2 points. In the medal round, US won twice for a total of 5 points. USSR won once for a total of 3. Sweden and Finland tied, so Sweden had 2 points for the Bronze and Finland only had 1.

They used the same format in 84 and 88, it was changed to a tournament style in the medal rounds beginning in 92.

for the olympics, yes. the best of the best compete in the olympics because that when it really "counts." b level players, and college kids compete in everything else.
Pretty much the same lineup took part in the Tournament of Americas one year before. Many of them were also present for the 06 WC.

College kids never take part any more.

If Canada took their best 20 players, put them on one team and they trained together 11 months a year like the Soviets did under Communism, they would destroy everyone, as well.

the USSR was far more dominant for longer.

You forget that Canada finished what? 7th? in the 06 olympics. USSR went

1956; gold
1960; bronze
1964; gold
1968; gold
1972; gold
1976; gold
1980; silver
1984; gold
1988; gold

Thats 7 gold and 9 medals in 9 straight olympics. Canada has 2 goalds and 2 medals in the last 3 attemps.

There was a country that won 6 golds & one silver in 7 straight Olympics. In fact they were so dominant that one year they were given a bye straight to the Final while everyone else played for the right to meet them.

Maybe you should have sent your best players then?

You cared more about being the best in NHL than the best in the world. The history is what it is. The fact that you didnt care to send players doesnt change a thing.

Ridiculous argument. If Canada was allowed to send their pros, they would have won some of those gold medals. Canada won 4 of the 5 Canada Cups from 76-91 and the 72 Summit Series.

USSR?

Really?

Canada won the 1972 Series, its all that matter.

All their Olympic Gold they won, Canada didn't played any NHL player on their club.

From 1920 to 1962 there was 29 Olympics and or WC's.

Canada won 21 golds, 6 silvers and a bronze

From 1963 to 1992 there were 28 Olympics or WC's.

The USSR won 22 golds, 3 silver and 2 bronze.

and the 1936 Great Britain team that beat Canada for gold was 100% Canadian players

I can't see where people are saying Soviet Union by a landslide.

If only.

If the swedes didnt have normal jobs besides playing hockey at that time....If Sweden had 60 million people living in the country instead of 9 million.

If only..

It wasn't about not caring. The Canadians were professionals and not permitted to play in those Olympics. The Soviets and other communist countries, took their best players put them in the army. Claimed their "jobs" were soldiers, not hockey players. The IOC bought it and allowed these "soldiers" to play in the Olympics.

You should probably learn a little history before you make such claims.

Canada own at hockey like no other country. Yes the Russians had great player too, but nowhere near the elite list and depth of Canada.

So many Canadian haters on HF its funny, especially around Olympic and WJC times... Its odd tho, when your favorite American team lift the Cup with 90% of Canadian player, I don't see any of you foreigner being mad about it because be honest, its Canadian player who bring those Stanley Cup in your country. (Sole exception lately are the Wings with Swedes and a Russian).

They have since 1994

they have, but most decline the invitation. Kevin Durant (top 3 player in the world) played, and the US won its 1st world championship in a while in 2010. they got focused and tried to win it so that the USA qualified for the Olympics automatically. they won the gold medal. Durant might play next year, but the team will be made up of b-rate NBA players/rookies and college seniors like always. no stars will compete next yr as there will be especially nothing to play for.

You seems to don't understand that the Soviet had a team full of pro and Canada had no NHLer in their team... Is it that hard for you to understand what that mean?

BTW, Canada is roughly a 35 millions of people living in the country...Not 60.
