The only thing dominating on theese boards are the superior amount of dimbwits from this country. End of thread. Yesterday they were dominated by the tiny nation Sweden.

Pretty dumb thread. Canada has been the best hockey nation, but each sport has a best nation. How could anyone say that Canada has dominated hockey more than say USA at (american) football? There are numerous other examples, many of which have already been mentioned. That being said...

Canada right now is nowhere near (and will never be) the CCCP

USSR in hockey... There u can talk about dominance

Yup.

The Soviets dominated the exact same sport in question for a longer period and with a far greater stranglehold. The Red Army was once thought unbeatable; no nation has ever held Canada in such esteem.

The Soviets dominated European hockey. They never dominated hockey inself. I'm pretty sure that Canada was thought of as even more unbeatable for say... the 80 years leading up to the 1960s, and after that period Canada has consistently been the superior hockey nation in terms of both quality of players and in national team strength (although the late 70s-early80s Soviets were almost certainly the strongest national team in the world). Canada used to send random amateurs to the world championships and they would clean up. That is dominance.

You forget that Canada finished what? 7th? in the 06 olympics. USSR went

1956; gold
1960; bronze
1964; gold
1968; gold
1972; gold
1976; gold
1980; silver
1984; gold
1988; gold

Thats 7 gold and 9 medals in 9 straight olympics. Canada has 2 goalds and 2 medals in the last 3 attemps.
That was soviet pros against the rest of the world's amateurs. And then when we put our pros against the Soviets it resulted in a little thing called the 72 Summit series. Who won that again?

Scotland maybe, as they won 6 of the first 7 home championships.

Or Uruguay, the best team in the world in 24, 28 and 30 (and 34 I should probably add).

How about Brazil, winners of 3 out of 4 WCups between 58 and 70.

But England?

Just listen to NA hockeyfans ;) International play means tripe. English football will always dominate no matter what.

The only thing Canada dominates in hockey is WJC. And even there they loose against Sweden.

They also have NHL with USA but that doesnt change anything when it comes to the olympics or WC.

You put your pros against the 2nd best team in Europe. When you're in a race and overtake the 2nd best, you're still merely the 2nd best yourself.

The other thing Canada dominates at, is their best players playing for teams in a foreign country.

and a cup donated to be won by Canada's top-ranking ice hockey club. Hasn't been won by a Canadian team in 17 years and not likely to be won by a Canadian team for a while:amazed:

Kidd, CPaul, DWilliams, Kobe, Wade, Lebron, Carmelo, Bosh, Howard...

That's certainly a bunch of bball superstars in that 2008 team.

for the olympics, yes. the best of the best compete in the olympics because that when it really "counts." b level players, and college kids compete in everything else. we win whenever we try to win. the 2004 athens olympics is the exception, not the rule. we got lazy, and it showed. picked too many players with character issues too.

Actually, this statement really piqued my interest. Who exactly was the best team in Europe then?

The diiference is we care as much about football as we do cricket. You obviously care about hockey otherwise you wouldn't be posting here.

Also as already mentioned Brazil running the world cup over and over.

No can come close to USA Basketball and their dominance. If they would of won the gold at the Munich games (as they should have) they would have only lost 4 games (5 currently) in the entire history of basketball at the Olympics, and keep in mind '92 was the first year for pro athletes which has helped out more nations than just the United States since how many more international players are playing now as opposed to 20 years ago.

Out of 4 best on best Olympics they have one 2. That's very good but not domination.
Now throw in the Canada Cups and World Cups. But to be fair I wasn't the one who ever used the word "domination". That was the original troller...er...poster.
