In a way, yes. If Karlsson simply left via UFA and San Jose didn't give him the (IMO, out of Cup-chasing desperation) 8x11.5, the trade would've been looked at a lot differently. Remember, Ottawa only got Stutzle because of that extension, as that pick was conditional on signing. In that event, then, the return would've only been DeMelo, Norris, Tierney, and Thomson, with the aforementioned Balcers back in San Jose. So really, the one mistake that the Sharks made was keeping Karlsson over Pavelski. That Dallas contract that Pavelski got looks really good right now, just saying. Sharks would've still remained a powerhouse if Wilson chose Pavelski and, maybe, a less expensive RHD deal, like say, that one year of Niskanen?

Only in the same sense that I maintain that my friend picking Tom Brady 2nd overall in our fantasy draft in 2007, even though that ended up being his record-breaking year with Moss and 18-1 and all that, was still stupid. Even if you had a great feeling about him, you could've gotten him later and ended up with an even better team.

Even if you want to maintain that the Sens somehow had some prescience about the SJ pick being top 5 (which I think is more a case of dumb luck), you still look at the package they got at the time and wonder how they didn't get more.

I think it's clear based on the results a few years later that the package the Sens got is a better group of player than we thought. But given what we thought at the time, I don't think I was alone in wondering how they couldn't have gotten more.

(Admittedly this is not a very practical distinction at the end of the day, just like me giving my friend crap for picking Tom Brady doesn't mean much when I missed the fantasy playoffs that year and he made it to the finals. But still feels like the Sens could've gotten more at the time, even if time has shown they got more than we thought.)

I will say that, of course Dorion didn’t know the pick would turn out to be #3 .... but I’ll also say, I’m quite confident he knew that Karlsson would sign the extension (as it was with a *supposedly* good team, and the offer was very similar to the one he turned down with the Sens), thus that conditional pick I’ve always considered to be very unconditional.

Sort of how Mark Stone could have gone to UFA after a half season with Vegas ... but he signed about 6 minutes after being traded.

COVID really messed up Wallmark's trajectory. He's no world-beater, but he was on track to be a solid 3C type. Seems he hasn't done much of anything since the virus hit him.

To me, he was more of a 4th liner who could move up in a pinch, but not a guy you wanted there full time.

I think we may have gotten a misrepresentation of his ability when he held down the fort when Staal was injured. Even getting more prime minutes that year, he had 17 5v5 points which was 10th on the Canes among forwards. His point/60 5v5 that year were 2nd worst among forwards on the team (only slightly better than Clark Bishop). Martinook, McGinn, McKegg, Foegele, Maenalanen, all had better points / 60. He was ok defensively, but his possession numbers were middle of the pack and his GF% was near the bottom.

The following year his numbers were a little better, but still 9th, mainly because Staal and Niederreiter couldn't score last year. There's a reason why Carolina went after Haula (and then Trocheck) so they didn't have to use Wallmark again as a 3C.

Florida fans then said he was terrible, not even 3rd line quality and he was scratched in Florida.

Covid could have messed him up as well though.

Oh, for sure he was a 4th liner at that time. But he was only 23. Given a reasonable development curve, by the time he gained some seasoning he should have had a bit more upside left to show. He was probably never going to be a good 3C, but he should have grown into a player capable of stepping into that role on a weaker club.

I have no insight on his time in Florida, other than to note that this was the same staff who thought it was a good idea to dump Trocheck.

AFAIK, Chicago was planning to use Wallmark as their 3C this year (I don't follow them that closely but I remember that being the idea). Of course, that was back when they were expected to be a doormat rather than a bubble team, so maybe there's some unexpected competition from other guys playing over their pay grade... I don't follow them that closely but it would make sense. I just look at his game logs before and after the COVID outbreak -- 3 points in 2 games before, and then 0 in 11 after -- and it looks pretty bad.

Wallmark's value was his versatility. He could be your 3rd center, or move up to either wing on a 2nd line and up his production via better linemates. He could also be your 4C and not look out of place between two grinders. He killed penalties. He was a good setup guy on the power play. He was so versatile it let other players slot in where they could be most effective. That's really useful to a team that doesn't have great forward depth or has injuries, not as useful to a team that has established players in established roles and depth as well. Versatility also lacks identity, and in hindsight this team is way better off with a grittier bottom 6 than we'd have if Wallmark was part of it.

Wally was great. Different teams, different roles. Over the years we’ve been a place a player could get a better shot than he could have somewhere. Wally was one of many that way. He was great defensively, was slow in open ice but was pretty slick in the offensive zone at times. If he had stayed he could’ve held down the third line role I think. Luostarinen looked better than Wally because he was a much better skater, which he has shown off this year pretty well. Hope he sticks.
