I will certainly have mixed emotions if he makes the team. Will be exciting to watch all year but I prefer another tank year and to slide his ELC one more year. Imagine being the guy who has to tell him we are sending you to the AHL or back to Finland after he has a solid audition and production? I know I would not want to be that guy
Both of these objectives can be accomplished even if he makes the team.

Kotkaniemi making the opening night roster...is far from a guarantee of him playing the minimum threshold for this season to count as an accrued season against his ELC, and his presence won't prevent the Habs from bottoming out, if that's where they're headed.

"the road to failure" that is not true for a good Prospect. Kotkoko seems amazingly Mature for his age, and as long as he doesn't look "bad" on top line minute I really don't see why he would need to go back. Also, if he is playing well, wants to stay, love the pressure and stress in Mtl, why in hell would we give him back ? He looks ready and if I compared him to Hischier or Patrick or Barzal, they all stayed in their organisation.

He loves Mtl and everything that comes with it, he wants to stay and he is our current best center. No reason to get him back to Finland when he's enjoying his time in Mtl. He fought for his spot too, I have yet seen no one saying Hischier should have went back to Swiss league, but both played similar

He was our best center, but to be fair, his competition was Danault, Peca and Plekanec. Not hard to beat.
He did fought for his spot but he won 3 NHL games in my book. Then he could win a lot more with these 3 games.

There's still 3 questions that need to be answered:
1- How to use him (Role), with who and can it work?
2- He's progressing at a fast pace since last year, will it continue or will stall in that role?
3- Can he be used against an NHL team on the road in that role?

To clarify, we're now on the road where it's possible for Kotkaniemi to fail immediately as he begins his NHL career. Right now, indeed, there is no reason to send him back.

But if he goes the first 9 games of the season and it's clear he's just not ready? Well, there will be a reason.

Definitely, I assume you understood that if he starts to play with difficulties and can't compete vs top lines, then yes to Finland!

I think most of the people Here are scared of the Galchenyuk Effect more than anything else, but Chucky had some off-ice problems

Yeah. @417 will tell you that this represents a major change in my opinion on this issue. Jesperi has just been so good that well...we have to see this through. We can't just send him back to Finland after what he's done in pre-season.

Dare I say, @417 may have gotten this one exactly right.

After this and the Pacioretty trade (and Benn getting waived which should happen any day now).

Dare I say i'm on a roll?

As I understand, the 9 games is not the issue...it's 40 games.

9 games is to send players back to their junior teams as I understand it.

Though I may be getting this totally wrong.

I'll also add though, that if he goes through the first few games and CJ is sheltering him to the point where he's barely playing or being challenged.

That's another reason to send him back.

If he's going to stay here, even for 20 or 30 games...then he needs to have a role and some consistent icetime.

Hello Hab fans

Really like Kotka!

The kid has some nice hockey IQ and patience to burn. I like the way he sees the ice and allows the play to develop, which as a centre allows him to make the right play most times. His zone play was impressive.

I was not impressed with the pick at first, but he has grown on me, and looks to be solid going forward.

He will only keep getting stronger as he develops, you got a good one here.

I say 9 games and send him back. Not because I don't think he is ready, but it will allow him to develop further while you rebuild.

If Petry were a better Dman, Edmonton would have kept him and wouldn't need to trade for Adam Larsson. He's fine on a deep team with Subban and/or Markov, but god forbid if he becomes the #1 RD on any team.

Fake news. He was a pending UFA who wasn't signing an extension. He was traded as a rental.

No one cares
He will hate it, and work on his game to become a better player next year.

If he doesn't, he was never gonna make it anyway.

Or you play him, burn a year of his contract on a worthless season, and find out half way he wasn't physically ready like Mete wasn't just last season and now you got a young kid who needs to play as much as possible riding the pine so Julien can play a trusted veteran in the centre role instead.

He's better than I thought. Which is great, but if that's the case, you don't want him around a locker room and management that will be mostly gone by the time he hits his peak. His career doesn't need the 18-19 Canadiens.
I am a bit over excited about this kid and for good reason, we have not had much to be happy about in the last years if you know what I mean. I want whats best for him because I see a very good player and a centre to boot, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Except everyone on TSN - you know the network that has nothing good to say about the Habs - said the same thing. They were all impressed by this kid and saw no reason to send him back to Finland. They had only one problem. Does the kid have the stamina to play 82 regular season games? If that's the case you just sit him for 15-20 games.

It was refreshing to hear them all have positive reviews about Kotkaniemi. I'm sure there'd be other ways to get him rested, he could get more therapy days and be allowed to miss practices. It's all about managing his time and someone like Ducharme would be great at making sure he's properly handled.
