Oof.
That was not an enjoyable game to watch. Did anyone count the breakaways given up? It had to be double digits, not counting partial breaks or 2-0r-3-on-1s.
Beagle, Motte and Virtanen as a line were the only positive I can see out of this, I liked that line and they weren't actively terrible. Normally I'd say they had too much time on the ice, but they didn't get scored on 5-on-5. I don't think Horvat's line did, while they were together, either. That's my bar for this game.
Sutter and MacEwen weren't awful, but Gaudette...man, I think I'm over him. He was bad enough to have lost the game for us solo, in spite of scoring the only goal of any significance for us this game.
Our defense couldn't take the pressure. Myers-Schmidt were pedestrian and didn't cover each others weaknesses. I don't like that pairing. Edler and Chatfield were getting over run at their blue line, seemingly every play. Chatfield's warts to his game definitely came up tonight. Hughes was out of position, or runover, on at least two of the early goals, and I don't think Benn can be a longterm coverage option here (covering Hughes), especially if we're playing Hughes as a top four D. It's a shame, as I've liked Benn's game for the most part this season.
While being unable to produce a single point, our top line was super unprepared defensively, which I found hilarious as the talking heads were all over how well they played defensively the last few games.
Even Shorthouse seem really off his game, like every other play he had the wrong name and number called.
