In the past as with Gainey acquiring Hossa’s rights from Wings it was conditional son the player signing- the fact the pick us no longer conditional leads me to believe there a level of confidence that he’ll re-up

Safekeep that thought under your couch pillows and hope that this guy doesn't wreck it.

Literally not one person is saying it's part of a bigger plan.

The Canadiens have terrible LHD, and they just acquired the rights to one who could help the team out. It isn't like anyone is saying that we'll flip Edmundson in a package for McDavid now.

Whenever Bergevin makes a move, no matter how little, people will come out and say he's a horrible GM, and that the Habs need to address X, why are they addressing Y.
Go back through this thread and see how many times people say, "oh this means mete/kulak are gone maybe in a package with danault/domi" or words to that effect.

Sigh, MB gonna MB. It's not like Allen and Edmundson are bad players but the whole thought process behind these acquisitions is just absurd. MB realized he had the picks, and the cap space to make moves and just for the sake of it he threw off all the leverage we had in order to very marginally improve our astonishingly average roster and dump a few of our extra picks in the process. I'm almost hoping this team miserably fails next year so Molson can finally open his eyes.

That same summer where Radulov and Markov left. Easily his worst off-season. He also traded for Schlemko that off-season. Remember, the defense improved?

Sergachev and Emelin too. I don't what was his beef with Russians back then but it sure was an odd summer. Not to mention the Price albatross.

Even then? Is he much of an upgrade, if, at all. I don’t think so, they are both number 5/6 dman. I’m not sure what we are doing here, but this is not a good move, there’s way better areas to tie up cap space. This isn’t it.

Well, the way I look at it, one of the other Ds has drawn interest from one or several GM, but MB knows there won't be a dman coming back.

Otherwise, it's a move that'll only squander our leeway to actually upgrade the team.

3.5 to 3.75m$ is my guess for 4yrs

this contract would bridge the gap between he and when Norlinder/Struble are ready to make the full time jump.....and if it’s a year early, you trade him, easy contract to move for a 6’4 defenceman at trade deadline

With a flat cap? Not sure he gets more than Chiarot. I'd offer a 2 year deal at $3.25M. He's been making $3M and $3.1M in two separate contracts for the last two seasons.

Edmundson is a PP specialist, big body, #4-5D that can play 20 min/game. UFA.
He can sign anywhere he wants. Montréal...My guess 4millions for 4 years.

Well with the acquisition of Allen/Edmundson it's becoming clear that somebody must have told him to look at how well the Blues did last year and to attempt to emulate their success...:sarcasm:

PK, sorry.

I don't have a problem with this move. He's played full seasons on strong defensive teams, Top-4 minutes. He's big bodied, stay-at-home D-Man. I see this as a move to help both Price and Weber stay fresher and not as busy.
Look at the COVID Invitational and see what Petry was able to do with a defensive partner. How much better Weber was rested and healthy. How much sharper Price was. So this guy can only help, IMO.

I just like the experience, size, grit and stability we get with him. And I have to assume that Jake Allen had something to say about Edmundson's value.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending MB in any way. Actually, in my Perfect World, the NHL Expansion Draft would allow a team to expose a GM to the draft.

I don't mind at all that Bergy is improving the defense and team size/toughness. It is clearly weaknesses right now IMO. However, Joel Edmundson, even as a good add that I already wanted last season, is not the answer now. I think we need a good puck moving producing D and size and toughness on forwards. This team is built like Habs always do : small forwards with big defensemans :

- The Koivu/Perreault/Petrov/Zednik/Gilmour/Juneau with Rivet/Quintal/Dykhuis/Souray/Traverse era
- The Koivu/Zednik/Ribeiro/Kovalev/Ryder etc. with Souray/Rivet/Komisarek/Simpson era
- The Plekanec/Gomez/Gionta/Cammalleri with Harmlik/Gill/Mara/O'Byrne/Sopel era
- The Desharnais/Pacioretty/Gallagher/Gionta with Emelin/Tinordi/Murray era

Now the Tatar/Danault/Domi/Gallagher/Suzuki/Drouin/Byron with Weber/Petry/Chiarot/Fleury/Edmundson era.

Never really worked, they should instead focus on improve the forward size
