This seems like an amazing signing for the Pens imo. So it got me thinking about the Nyl signing.

Which player would you rather have regardless of contracts?

Edit: Just as some quick background info:

Guentzel:
114p in 158gp

Last season 48p in 82gp
Season before 33p in 40gp

Playoffs
16-17 : 21 points in 25 games
17-18 : 21 points in 12 games

Nyl:
137p in 194gp

Nyl has 2 61 b2b seasons with 81 and 82 gp

Playoffs
16-17 : 4 points in 6 games
17-18 : 4 points in 7 games

Good poll, similar caliber players i think. Guentzel plays with Crosby, but Nylander rides shotgun with Matthews. Guentzel a year and a half older, but also has been better in the playoffs.

Guentzel
Reg season
16-17 : 33 points in 40 games
17-18 : 48 points in 82 games
18-19: 33 points in 36 games
Playoffs
16-17 : 21 points in 25 games
17-18 : 21 points in 12 games

Nylander
Reg season
15-16 : 13 points in 22 games
16-17 : 61 points in 81 games
17-18 : 61 points in 82 games
18-19 : 2 points in 9 games
Playoffs
16-17 : 4 points in 6 games
17-18 : 4 points in 7 games

Nylander's advantage is that he can play center better than Guentzel can, although Guentzel can play center. Guentzel's advantage is that he produces way better at ES and is a playoff monster. Guentzel should win this poll, not comfortably but he should win it.

Guentzel is statistically closer to Marner than he is to Nylander. I wouldn't put Guentzel on Marner's level because Marner is much more of a line driver than Guentzel is, but I definitely think Guentzel is high in the Nylander/Ehlers/Huberdeau group.

Here's the stats since Guentzel's 1st game in the NHL:

Guentzel: 44 goals and 96 points at ES in 158 games, ES points/60 of 2.45
Huberdeau: 32 goals and 94 points at ES in 148 games, ES points/60 of 2.48
Ehlers: 51 goals and 103 ES points in 179 games, ES points/60 of 2.37
Nylander: 25 goals and 79 points at ES in 154 games, ES points/60 of 2.18

Guentzel already works really well on the Pens. Not sure how Nylander would do better and Jake’s playoff performances have been outstanding.

I really like Nylander but if it ain’t broke......

Wonder why age isnt being considered...
Ill go with nylander for now, hes off to a bad start after his holdout, but he can play up and down the lineup and multiple positions is very helpful.

Didn’t Nyl play along with Matthews though? If not then who?
hes playing with kadri right now and getting 15 mins a game compare that to playing with crosby and 18:40 a game huge difference. Not to mention the year and a half age gap too.

Yes but this season is not a reasonable stat to bring up. Do you happen to know his ice time with his b2b 61p seasons?

16:41 last year and 16 mins the year before
vs
16:30 and 15:53 for Guentzel

similar ice time the last two years, nylander was more productive with lesser mates, and being 1.5 years younger.

Because Guentzel is like a year and a half older than Nylander, the age difference is insignificant between the two. Guentzel was a 2013 draft pick and Nylander was a 2014 draft pick.

Yes, Nylander was more productive because he got way more powerplay production than Guentzel did, which was due to who he played with. I like how you're mentioning that Guentzel plays with Crosby at ES, while ignoring that Nylander puts up a ton of powerplay points with much better players than Guentzel plays with on the powerplay.

i think age should matter for young players, 1.5 years is not insignificant at this stage. nylander was back to back 60 point seasons at age 20 and 21, Guentzel is no where near that until this year playing a lot more then nylander ever has.

It shouldn't because both are top line players already. You're mentioning age solely because it's a benefit for Nylander in your eyes. The age difference is very insignificant and both players are near their upsides already.

Interesting, cheers for that. I agree with what a poster above said. Nyl for reg season and Guentzel for playoffs. I’d select Nyl if he got off to a better start but I’m sure that will be an easy change by the end of the season.

Edit: I still find it hard to see Nyl being an upgrade on Crosby’s line for some reason though.

false again, nylander hasnt ever gotten top line minutes so we dont know that. nylander has more to show and i could say the same for you trying to ignore the age gap since Guentzel would have less to show so ofc you dont want to count it.

Voted for the bird in the tuxedo. Nylander's season is a mess. This should have been his break out year but instead it's a disaster.

Could change next year.

And Guentzel hasn't gotten top line minutes until this year, and he's damn near a PPG player with almost no PP production this year. Based on what does Nylander have "more to show" that Guentzel doesn't have? Does some magical year and a half difference mean that Nylander has some untapped potential that Guentzel doesn't have? If anything, you'd have a stronger argument for Guentzel having some sort of untapped potential because he was a late bloomer.

When you're talking about 2 guys who were picked a year apart, age difference means nothing. The age gap means something if you're comparing a 10 year veteran to a rookie, not 2 players a year and a half apart in age that were drafted in back to back drafts.
