I seem to remember that in the 1960s, the penalty "box" had a shared bench! You take two guys who've been socking each other, sit them side-by-side and expect them to behave. Somehow, it usually worked.

During the 1954/55 season and ahead of the IIHF World Championships hosted in the city Preussen Krefeld met Dynamo Moscow for series of exhibition games home and away, the first time any Soviet sports ensemble had entered West Germany. The Soviets were concerned enough of achieving the right results that instead of leaving it to Dynamo they fielded their full national team and just sewed "M" for Moscow on the sweaters. Here in picture star forward Vsevolod Bobrov posing with the Germans.

Krefeld also joined forces with East German champions Dynamo Weißwasser for yet another game against the Soviets in Berlin, allegedly this collaboration was controversial enough for the responsible club official to be banned from hockey for life.

Here also some Soviet footage of one of the games, unfortunately in very low quality:

Remember Bobby Sheehan's stint with the New York Rangers?
gettyimages-1271873803-612x612.jpg
He was signed as a free agent by the Blueshirts before the 1978-79 season, and then spent that entire regular season in the AHL with the New Haven Nighthawks, where he picked up 81 points in 70 games. After the loss of Game One of the playoffs to the Philadelphia Flyers, Coach Fred Shero promoted Sheehan to add some speed. Bobby added that speed, and some offensive production: he scored 4 goals and added 3 assists in 15 playoff games, as the Rangers made it to the Stanley Cup Final (where they were eliminated by the Habs). Sheehan's reward was a trade to the Colorado Rockies.

Good ole Bobby Sheenan, first American to play for the Habs. I skated on the same rinks as he did and all our coaches used to use his name to motivate us to practice, practice and practice some more to be like Bobby.

Here’s Bobby Sheehan as he is today:

The day before the game December 6 at Maple Leaf Gardens, the Nordiques arrive. Here we see Jamie Hislop, Peter Stastny and his brother Anton - a trio often seen together on the ice.
