The point is that it is clear that the Preds organization, even when rebuilding, is determined to build a roster that can compete for a playoff spot. Whether that's due to revenue concerns, commitment to sportsmanship, whatever...as trigg points out, Poile didn't even tank following the firesale, nor following Suter's departure and Weber's offer sheet (which would have set-us up GREAT for a teardown). As much as some of you want to see it, we are not going to rip the roster down to the studs and collect top 5 picks for several years. So in that context, Granlund is a skilled, hard-working, high character player that can play in all situations. He can play a top 6 role if the youngsters struggle (and people should assume that not all of Tomasino, Tolvanen, Glass are going to perform well) or slide down into a 3rd line and PP/PK role should they all do well. Even when rebuilding/retooling you need reliable vets throughout the lineup to maintain a certain level of competitiveness (losing too badly too often is terrible for player development), and also to mentor/model for the developing players. Granlund checks off all those boxes.
