Gomez offered tryout contract by Devils

I've never been a fan of Gomez but if he can find a second wind and improve the bottom 6 then so be it.

How do we re-sign knuckleheads like Stephen Gionta and Steve Bernier, offer the rotting corpse of Scott Gomez a try out but leave Ryan Carter behind in the dust like that?

Absolutely mindboggling.

That's why I have absolutely no idea what's going on.

Cammalleri-Zajac-Jagr
Brunner-Elias-Havlat
Clowe-Henrique-Ryder
Zubrus-Ruutu-Bernier

Josefson-Gionta-Gomez
Carter (I'm sure he'll get signed too)

Can't have that many guys on one way deals. Zubrus and Ruutu aren't fourth line guys.... what the hell is going on?

Gomer will come in look good. Say some stupid **** like he should never have left. Lou out of loyalty will give him a contract. Then he will proceed to turn into a steaming pile. Board Explodes.

Ryan Carter is the hottest commodity of Gionta and Bernier

There is a solid chance he was fielding other offers and didn't want to sign right away so as a normal GM would do, Lou re-signed Gionta and Bernier to have a backup plan in place in case Carter did sign elsewhere - part of that backup plan includes how Lou in so many words said that Bernier does not have a guaranteed spot and partially why we have a surplus of forwards

Essentially Bernier, Josefson, Gomez will be fighting for spots and with the way our offense has been who knows, assuming nobody is moved, that guys won't continue to struggle (Ryder, Brunner, Havlat) or others become injured

Do we have a couple too many forwards? Numbers wise and on paper sure, but pick any point during last season or the season before and tell me you didn't wish we had 'too many' forwards

It's really not that hard to understand

Yeah but there's just too much mediocrity. Clowe-Zubrus-Ruutu-Brunner-Ryder-Havlat. They are all streaky and older complimentary pieces.

We have to HOPE that Jagr repeats his surprising performance, Zajac puts up over 50 points, Cammalleri plays at least 2/3 the season and scores goals, Elias doesn't show his age, Brunner finally has a solid pro and full pro season, Clowe stays healthy and contributes as much as he looked like he was last year, Zubrus bounces back from a terrible season last year, Ruutu plays the way he should be and stays healthy, Ryder bounces back and scores 30 goals, Henrique continues to progress and not level out under 50 pts a year, Zidlicky has another great season, Gelinas, Larsson, and Merrill become good pros, Salvador doesn't fall down and die.... and then there's Gionta, Carter, Bernier, Gomez, and Josefson... guys that we aren't expecting much from.

Staying healthy is something this team has a problem with the past few years. This entire roster was found in a $5 dvd bin at the front of Wal Mart. You buy them hoping they are decent. This could be a great year... or an absolutely horrible year.

I would much rather have too many forwards like we do now than to have guys like Sestito and Janssen as our injury call ups. And let's be honest, it will be a miracle if we get 60+ games out of both Clowe and Havlat. Cammalleri also usually misses some time. Jagr, Elias, and Zubrus all have a lot of miles on them, and are more likely to break down. And it's not like the logjam we had on defense where multiple kids were pushing for playing time. Matteau and Boucher could both benefit from another year in Albany.

Yea I'm not really sure what the confusion is about

The past season we had to do exactly what you said (ie: Cam/Sestito/Olesz/etc) and there was complaining that our forward depth was weak

Now that we have enough, a surplus at that, several which are question marks whether due to age, ability, or health - it's a problem

I can just see Gomez making the team.

It's fate.

I mean....if Bobby Holik was able to come back, or Petr Sykora(for that matter) then....yeah. :dunno:

I dislike that smarmy look on his face when he smiles. It's a face that says "Hit me hard with a sledgehammer".

But whatever....I really shouldn't be surprised at this point about anything but......I was so ever hopeful.

Having to put guys like Zubrus and Ruutu on the fourth line is a boon, not a problem.

Hope he returns 23 back to its former glory. Will def goto a preseason game to see him play. Always liked him. I don't see how he fits on the team though. He's a 3rd line center, he would be useless anywhere else.

He could play wing on the top two lines if Havlat or Cammalleri get hurt.

He could also be used on the powerplay. With Gomez, he could be on the 2nd unit. The 1st unit could be all Czech mates lol. Havlat, Elias, Jagr, Zidlicky and Kaberle if he makes the team. The 2nd unit would be ok with Gomez, Henrique, Greene, Brunner and Gelinas.

With Gomez and Kaberle too, we can always wait until after the season starts to sign them. Wait for a couple injuries to develop. I doubt anyone else will really wanna sign Gomez, unless he lights the world on fire in preseason.

I don't know about you guys, but I would already prefer Gomez to Bernier and Gionta. Hopefully it causes Space Junk to get waived right off the bat. We know it won't get Gionta waived though.

It would have caused an uproar here if we did go this route, but I would have been okay with signing Gomez on July 1st to a one year contract, and not re signed Gionta at all. If we didn't bring back Carter, we may as well have lost the other two.

I agree with wanting Gomez vs Bernier and Gionta.

even if he does go on fire in preseason there no guarantee that it will translate into season success…..

Gomez had 12 points in 46 games last year. Space Junk had 11 in 78 games, Gionta had 12 in 66 games. Not to mention that Space Junk must have gotten almost half of his points playing with Elias. He played with Elias for a stretch and still produced squat. I can't see Gomez being worse than that. Though if Gomez is playing with Patty, we're in some trouble. Even Zubrus produced at a slower clip than Gomez during the second half of last year.

Definitely doesn't mean anything, you're absolutely right. But like I said, it can't be too much worse than Gionta and Bernier.

We've had so many bargain bin signings/trades over the last two years, none of which have worked out. I actually thought Bobby Butler and Olesz were good signings when they happened. I think I liked the Dagostini trade too. All 3 of them were a vortex of suck, so my expectations for Gomez are pretty damn low.

I see Gionta listed as a RW on certain sites, why cant we play him at RW and have a Carter / Gomer / Gionta 4th line?

Why does lil Gio have to be a center this season?

I'm not sure. Maybe they will play him as a winger this year though?
