Well, it depends on the player.

A guy like Rob Scuderi signed with Columbus even though he had offers from playoff teams (for less money) because he has won multiple cups in his career.

A guy like Alex Edler signed with a cup contender even though he had offers from much worse teams for much more money because he hasn't won a cup yet, and is entering his prime years.
