A big part of Hughes, and other undersized offensive defenceman, is that to be effective he needs a strong team system. Goalies making saves or directing rebounds to safe areas, defensive partners taking the harder match-up and dirty areas, and forwards buying in and getting pressure in the defensive zone. His role is to basically come out of the piles with the loose puck and create offense. When one part breaks down, you see some cracks but the good can paper over it. Unfortunately, the team doesn't have any of those qualities.
When Hughes has the puck, good things usually happen. The problem is there is nothing in place to ensure that he has the puck. The entire offense really should be geared towards get him control of the game.
