Gardiner or Rielly?

Edit: Since everyone's picking both - I'll add another twist...

Gun to your head, you have to pick one. If you pick both - you die, but allow the Leafs to keep both of their defencemen.

Added a new twist because a lot of people are going to pick both anyway - but die true Leafs fans (in their heads).

I asked this question because like I said - it's the safe prospect vs the boom/bust prospect. On HFBoards, potential > current ability it seems.

Gardiner is pure money right now, and I don't believe Rielly's ceiling is much higher than Gardiners.

All the people picking Rielly, and how this board overrates draft picks/prospects in general, makes me really worried about the new casino they're opening in the GTA. Some of you guys have a real propensity to gamble :P.

only way gardiner goes is for a stud young cente coming back

gardiner obvuously should have been a top 5 pick ......start there and not SAM GAGNER .
RNH MAYBE

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't trade him for Gagner. It'd have to be in a package for RNH or else I prefer to keep him.

Both, for chrissakes. This is what is known in the trade as a competitive advantage, and people want to trade one of them away? ****, what are they thinking?

Didn't read the whole "this is purely hypothetical, I don't want one traded" part. It's just for giggles bud, nobody wants anybody traded

Not a chance. He was great and I'm a huge fan of Franson but Gardiner was hands down, indisputably, by far our best player in that series. Even his struggles in his own end completely disappeared. An absolutely magnificent showcase of how good he can potentially be.

If we trade Gardiner I might cry.

LOL at anyone saying Franson was better than Gardiner, Cody was good but Jake was a revelation!:shakehead

FYI we probably wont be seeing Rielly in a Marlies jersey next year. He has to play at least 1 more year in the WHL and judging from the Moose Heads performance they will not be making the playoffs. However, unlike last year and since Reilly wont be coming back, the Moose Head will trade Rielly to a playoff team. What that means is if the team that gets Rielly has a long playoff run and if the Marlies dont make the playoffs / early exit, we will not be seeing Rielly in Toronto for a long time.

I picked Gardiner because you know what you get. And that's an NHL player.

I had really hoped Rielly would dominate the AHL.

I, for one, hope the Mooseheads make the playoffs next year, especially if they managed to pickup Morgan Rielly :naughty:

Rielly. Dominant in the dub on an awful team.

It's funny that people think because Rielly didn't light it up in the A (ignoring the fact he came in at the hardest time of the year, after playing in the WJC, SSS, Can-Rus challenge, whole CHL year, and the Leafs training camp). Yet he posted almost identical numbers to Gardiners rookie year while being 2 (IIRC) years younger.

In a few years, Rielly will be the best D man this team has had in a while.

Uh... did you read the original post?
It said that, in a hypothetical situation where we can only keep one, who would it be?
Your answer is "both"? If we HAD to choose "one", you'd choose "both".
Wow.
Speechless.

Anyways...
Rielly, no contest.

 Classic post from one of my fave posters.
And agreement on Rielly no contest.

i'd keep gardiner. in war you go with what's proven, not what's potential.

gardiner has shown he can easily adjust to the speed of elite hockey. reilly has shown he has elite speed when compared to his junior peers. not the same thing. also, with gardiner, this team made the playoffs and gave boston, the conference finalists, fits.

so based on probability, i'd keep gardiner; however, the second factor is who is more likely to resign? i don't know about gardiner, but reilly and father were leafs fans growing up. easier to resign.

basically if were going after the top 3 slots and someone asked for specifically gardiner or reilly, i'd give it to them. however, if they said we'll take either, i'd give them reilly.

/shrug. He's an 18 year old defenseman. The fact that he earned consistent ice time from a now NHL coach is enough for me.

If I HAD to pick just one.......I'd go with Rielly. He's Canadian, he has a higher ceiling, and he's the best skater in his draft year BY FAR.

Luckily, we don't have to pick just one.

The two of them should be dynamite for us for years to come.
