Either consistency or that Jo. Korpisalo and Hännikäinen are C-list Finnish ice hockeyists by standard. Kekäläinen should have capitalized on the Korpisalo hype similar to Dano with a trade after his 'breakthrough season' when the notion of Korpisalo being a promising young Finnish goaltender came about for some reason and in full force. Dano had qualities which were maxed through Hartnell's and rookie Wennberg's contributions.

If we look at current Finnish wicket sentinels you have two enormous surefire talents in Rask and Saros. Then you have Rinne who has been fortunate enough to have always the perfect situation in terms of style of play in front of him. Or behind him as happened in the latest World Cup through friendship as a far better goaltender in Rask or Lehtonen was left biting the scabbard by decision of a friend who happened to be the goaltending coach for the Lions. Niemi and Raanta in comparison registered seismicly on the Eurasian ice hockey pyramid in SM-liiga and soon enough were already in the NHL.

New Edmonton Oilers starter Mikko Koskinen registered long and good on the Eurasian ice hockey pyramid for years for Sibir and SKA in the KHL and Finnish national team. Creating only ridiculous contract offers as the best that he got was 2,5 million dollars for one year. For a free to all goaltender. The no competition environment of NHL kept Koskinen out of the communist league. It was not local hero Cam Talbot, whom Koskinen quickly ate, whom many in Northern American held as standard who would keep him out. It was always a question of the play instead, a question which tends to reveal quality of the player. Koskinen had already answered.

Yeah, it was impressive. But the quality one looks for when watching auditions for Starting Goaltender is consistency, and Korpi also demonstrated that night that he still doesn't have that. If he gets it, he could be awesome. But it's still too soon to crown him Bob's successor, and that's a concern.

Sure, we can argue semantics, but in my mind it makes no sense to judge starting goalie "consistency" over the period of 1 game. I'd also argue that just the idea OF consistency in the modern NHL is hard to judge for goalies as the situations (PP opportunities among other things) and goals against vary quite a bit game by game.

But, this season HAS NOT been long enough for anybody to make a "absolute judgement" on either goalie. It could be easily said that Bob has demonstrated just as much inconsistency as Korpisalo, BOTH in the past AND this year.

So, if its too soon to crown him Bob's successor, than it should be too soon to consider him NOT his successor. I don't know how its a "concern" that he hasn't taken over the spot after 20 games in the year, that he's played less than half the games. Not to mention this is his 1st time EVER getting a LEGIT LOOK at starting over Bob, and him even getting this opportunity was predicted by essentially nobody. These 2-3 extra games that HE DESERVED was not the audition.

IMO the KICKER is that somebody is going to be his successor, and IT VERY WELL MAY BE Korpisalo. Or he will at the very least probably be but into a 1B type situation. So he should be given more of a look AND a "leash" than Bob this year, IMO. Again, its NOT like Korpisalo is out there losing games. Literally or figuratively.

Oh... should I just go the "Bob/numbers defense".. Where is the negativity for Korpisalo coming from and why?
