He should in theory still carve out an OK career as a back up. Injuries derailed his career. But also, for a while, there was a razor thin difference between Gilles and Rittich. Rittich was a bit rickety, but after a good off season, he was a reasonable NHL talent for a bit.
IIRC, the injury levels Gilles has endured these last few years were similar to what scared Calgary away from drafting Demko in the first place. Demko recovered from his surgeries and is a bonafide NHL talent. Gilles kept adding injury and inconsistency and languished. If Vancouver get their hands on him and rehab and re-train him, watch out. He'd have Ben Bishop potential again within a few seasons. Also, Gilles has played with Demko in tournaments before.
