The way we played it's unfortunate to get 1. They dominated ovetime, and yes didn't have the shots on goal in the 3rd but hell the effort tonight was night and day compared to the previous 2 games.

A lot of effort with nothing to show for it is just wasted effort.

They did look like they tried a lot harder than the previous 2 games. But they still scored the same amount of goals, and still can't score at even-strength.

The way they played the third, ESPECIALLY in the last 5 minutes of the game, they didn't deserve a point, let alone 2.

Holy shit he can't be serious? That 3rd period was f***ing awful effort by the forwards and they should be ripped apart. Peters is freaking weak, stop settling for mediocrity, this team needs to be pushed into something greater, a good 1st period & OT isn't good enough. Push your team to play great throughout the whole game. This quote pissed me off. I don't know as a coach how you can be happy with this game.

Side note: I will credit that Ward and the defense played a great game tho.

2 whole shots entire third period

"Liked our effort"

I think it's time to separate effort and SOG. One doesn't equal the other. Philly played a good defensive game in the 3rd.

Hey, sometimes the other team just has a defensive answer, and Philly did in the 3rd. They had every bit the same chance to get 2 as the Flyers. You historically defend Ward and that's fine, but you can't watch that goal and say Ward is free from accusation. You'd have to be a lunatic. What you have to understand is Ward did everything he could, and one hell of a job to keep them in it. I'll applaud it, but a softy is a softy and unfortunately, it cost them the chance at 2 points whether people want to believe they'd win a SO or not.

I'm wondering whether I watched the same game as you guys.

Jordan Staal may not have the best hands but he played a hell of a game and has been consistently good all season. I didn't see a single 50/50 puck battle where he didn't win possession. On the OT play from Skinner, he got the puck on net but Elliot made one hell of a save with his stick.

I also don't think Ward had to stand on his head at all. He made a few good saves but I'd say giving up one goal is about average based on what came his way up until the overtime goal. There is absolutely no excuse to give up a five hole goal on a weak shot that literally didn't even leave the ice. Weal basically put a hard pass on net and Ward blew it. Elliot faced tougher shots and outplayed Ward.

McGinn being in the ice in OT is yet another example of poor coaching. His skill set is hitting and getting in on the forecheck. Not possession, shooting, passing, or defending. In other words he's pretty bad at hockey and can only do a couple of things well and neither of those things are useful in 3 on 3.

I get that Cam was the reason they stayed in it, and I said that it was pathetic by everyone else. But sometimes your goalie needs to steal a win. Cam put himself in a position to do that, and then does what he has so many times before. Cam let in a softy. Elliott made an outstanding save before that and only let in 1, so it's not impossible. Of course we can't expect to only score 1 and win most of the time. But you should be able to expect after your goalie plays a great 64.57 or whatever not to blow his own great game.

But of course I'm not putting it all on Cam like most will think. We have many players and coaches that need to be shown the door after these pitiful games.

Plan A: Tell Francis we're not getting enough effort from this crew and ask for reinforcements.

Fail.

Plan B: Tell Francis we got full effort and we still lost to Philadelphia at home. Imply we need reinforcements.

Probably fail.

Plan C: Actively try to get fired.

Probably also fail.

Set the place on fire.

Probably fail, but hey also probably a better chance at changing something than anything else.

To me, this game is a make or break one. Not in the sense that the season is on the line, but you're at home facing a division rival you're fighting neck and neck with for a playoff spot. If they come out flat, especially after everything said the last few days, I think we need to see some big changes. I just don't know what those are.

As constructed, this team still lacks center depth. Rask has been up and down, but ultimately hasn't really been capable of driving play or anchoring a line. I'd love to see him on the wing. Aho and Lindholm both have center potential, but it's hard to break up the TSA line since that's pretty much the only thing working right now. I'm interested to see how Lindholm looks with Skinner tonight, who's basically played with Carolina 3rd liners this year, who are probably more like 4th liners on your average team. Trading him would be a mistake and it would remind me too much of giving up on Eric Staal (something I and a lot of other people were comfortable with when it happened), who's been flourishing with Minnesota over the last year and a half. I think, aside from a few other wingers like Teravainen and Williams, many of the rest are the sorts of players they've had through here over the last decade, just with a different number on their backs. They're all the same -- average at a lot of things but not really great at anything. It's easy to defend when everyone you're facing is no different from each other.

Offensively, I might roll something like

Aho // Staal // Teravainen
Skinner // Lindholm // Williams
Rask // Ryan // Stempniak
McGinn // Kruger // Nordstrom

The top six almost looks like a playoff team, but the rest sucks. I think McGinn is what he is and is probably better suited for the 4th line, but then you've got a pretty soft top 9 for only a bit more skill. And putting Rask on the wing is gonna force somebody out of position. Flip as necessary. I don't know -- I just think, ultimately, they should load up and adjust ice-time accordingly.

Defensively, I don't know what happened to Slavin after the first 20 or so games. He was looking great, and he just took a nosedive hard with flashes of brilliance every now and then. He's pretty much tethered to Pesce at this point, who seems to be a bit of a stabilizing presence. Faulk has been **** all season with a rotating cast of partners, though TVR/Hanifin are good enough as a bottom unit. I don't see many options for variety here. McKeown isn't ready, and Fleury hasn't been that good. Honestly, it's almost worth exploring a potential package of Fleury + to see what that would bring in return. You've got 4-5 guys already in the NHL that could be here for several more years, plus McKeown in Charlotte and Jake Bean in the pipeline. Someone is expendable.

In goal, they're married to Darling so he needs to figure things out. Ward has at least played well at times, but he's going to be run into the ground, again, if they keep riding him too hard. I don't think there's anything you can do here.

Honestly, it's almost worth being buyers and sellers at the deadline. Plunge the bottom six of crap and let young, talented wingers from Charlotte get a look, and also get a ****ing center because they have like 1.5 right now.
Reading back through the thread, I agree with this analysis. We still have so many bums plugged into the lineup that no one's ice time can be seriously threatened. And then our call up from Charlotte is another bum in pdg. For all the tinkering and talk of rolling four lines, it's laughable and baffling how ineffective our fourth line is. For all the games he's played the only thing I can remember about Kruger is his only goal scored out of sheer luck. How Nordstrom is still on this team is beyond me. We need players that can actually win board battles. In summary, kill Kruger, Nordstrom, ryan, etc. Bring up zykov, wallmark, and foegele and scatter them through the lineup.

It seems to me that they are playing with a lot of fear. The second period we played simply to not suffer the goal. We do not look like a desperate team, the Flyers seemed much more desperate than us and probably this will also make the difference. I wonder how long we will not do anything to show that we want to make the playoffs. Frankly i didn't see all this effort when we had the lead for example. For sure there is no sense of urgency watching them play.
