If we were to go the MLB route I don't see Molson keeping up with actual monetary powerhouses of the league (rangers, leafs, bruins, chicago, flyers) that aren't afraid to spend to win

Why pay him more if you can save a mil or two? You know you can match any offer, try to get the best possible deal unless someone forces your hand. Seeing how he's an RFA and can't just up and leave, might as well use whatever leverage you have in the negotiations.

Their leverage to sign him to a good deal is pretty much gone with teams circling in with offer sheets, which can only be overpayments.
