Trocheck would be nice, solid defensively and can chip in offensively. And as Tavares ages he could play as the 2nd line centre to let Tavares slide to the wing. But unfortunately he is a player that will get $6-7M with term.

So maybe target another Hurricanes centre, Jordan Staal. Ideal 3rd line centre. Strong defensively, hits a lot, and wins a lot of draws who can give you 40-45 points. Move out Kerfoot for picks and sign Staal to a 2 year deal worth $3M per at most. Could have 2 strong defensive lines in the bottom 6 with Staal and Kampf as the centres.

Staal isn't a free agent until next year

Seems like a lot of smoke around Aston-Reese and Strome.

Not sure if it’s Campbell to the Oilers tampering smoke, or just speculation smoke though lol

Ottawa getting Giroux should bump them into wildcard status.

They need progress from their youngsters but they’ve had a great offseason so far in bringing in Debrincat and possibly now Giroux. Legit talent to help their young core.

With Boston declining, it seems that Ottawa might be a he next team to rise up.

which I’m excited for. Given our history, facing Ottawa in round 1 May be the only way we can advance past that round lol

They improved enough to remove much margin of error.

Most likely it would be Boston, but any of the top Atlantic teams could easily find themselves on the outside this year.

Not sure why 2 players from non playoff teams vaults ottawa from 7th last to wildcard in a 100 pt division

I really don't get qualifying Engvall and committing to pay him money that could have been used for a better backup or a better class of forward on the free agent market. It may be a bigger self-injury by the GM than the goalie fiasco.

Why does it matter if they were non playoff teams?

Debrincat and Giroux should give Ottawa a legitimate top 6 that is competitive within the division:

Debrincat-Stutzle-Batherson
Tkachuk-Norris-Giroux

There are other important factors though. Their youngsters have to progress, their depth is going to be important, and they need their goaltending to hold up.

But it’s entirely possibly for them to compete for a wild card spot.

With us having no money yet again, it's going to be a day full of "Low risk, High reward" signings isn't it? We normally have a 50-50 shot at them turning out.

I'd like to see less quantity and more quality with these July 1st (normally) signings.

Ironically, Ottawa is our last playoff round win in 2004.

So what are we thinkin?

Who is a good 3c target that won’t break the bank?

Assuming Holl and Kerfoot are both moved for picks:

Bring in: marchment, ZAR, maybe take a flyer on subban if he’ll come dirt cheap, sign a backup like samsonov or Comrie

Ottawa could easily be the most improved team in the division by the time the season starts.

Isn't Strome quite slow and not very physical? I've even heard him many times considered to be a low intensity type of player.

Not sure that's the type of player we should be looking to add to our bottom 6.
Strome is slow, but he's been an effective play driver offensively and good defensively, not to mention good on draws and produces whether he's with Kane/DeBrincat or with anyone else. Just because he doesn't hit doesn't mean he's soft or doesn't care. You just hear the same shit about him as the vocal minority of our fanbase says about Nylander.

Guy would be great as an offensive 3C to actually get a line that could produce this season, or use him as a W/move Tavares to W if Keefe is still 100% about having the 3rd line play virtually every defensive zone shift.

Sens gunna have a pretty good team next year. Wouldn't be shocked if they challenge Boston for a playoff spot considering all the injuries Boston is starting the year with.

I doubt it's smokes and mirrors. It's almost a done deal according to many sources. Oil brass also loves ex Leafs so I don't see how this is not going to happen

Oilers still have some money left with Keith retiring and goaltending is their most pressing need

Jack also not going to get this type of offer from anyone else. This is by default best options for both parties
