Really?
Geno was the best player in hockey last season with HMH and HMR, but it's better for Geno to have Kessel with him.
Okay . . .
What's with the "Okay..."? He literally played the majority of his season with Kessel, do you think they didn't combine on any goals? Malkin was a beast last year, but he was a beast with literally every combination basically. The facts are Kessel produced 2.17 points/60 last season at 5v5, Malkin produced 2.4 points/60 last season, those were the highest on the team. Hornqvist was 1.3 points/60, Hagelin was 1.5 points/60 and Rust was 1.5 points/60. If those combinations were so much better, it had more to do with Malkin just playing better than it had to do with any perceived advantage due to a Kessel-less line combination. Do you think they never shared the ice 5-on-5 and combined for a point after they started using these different lines?
Kessel and Malkin have always been a good combination, in 2017 they produced at a GF% of 73 in 400 minutes of game time (which is bonkers), and in 2016 they produced at GF% of 57 in 600 minutes. Those are solid numbers. Maybe you don't like the way it looks or something, but its kind of silly to suggest it doesn't work well or that it's somehow odd to believe the combination has success when the results speak for themselves.
