So, what good deals were inked today? I'm having a hard time finding any, middling role players or back-up goalies notwithstanding.

Hemsky? That seems like a solid deal to me. Ernhoff? Definitely solid, and pisses me off a little.

After that? I'm having a hard time finding any that seem really reasonable to me.

Brad Richards for $2mill is pretty damn good.

Including trades:

Iginla was a great add to Colorado I think (even at that length) and Dallas is a pretty massive winner here. Ehrhoff signing was great but Pittsburgh lost out in tons of other ways. Minnesotta did okay by adding Vanek and not doing anything terrible. St. Louis made out good. Chicago made a smart deal with Richards.

Everyone else either did nothing or did terrible. Florida and Washington were an absolute lolfest. Toronto and Pittsburgh weren't as lol worthy but they still did pretty badly, trades included.

Mezz at 1 year was an obvious move to get to,the floor IMO so not top 5 worthy. I put Bolland right at top 3

Don't think Mes is that bad of a contract. A lot of money but a 1 year deal has no risk.

It's also Buffalo. What the hell should they care. Either he does well and flip him for assets plus entertain the fans or he helps the clear "rebuild" (since this is like scorched Earth rebuild). Either way he helps reach the cap floor too.

Definitely agree with Orpik at number one. That one is truly baffling.

Also, how does Komarov get that kind of contract after not playing in the NHL (where he was a 4th liner) for a year? Did he put up good numbers in the KHL?

Eh, I think Richards is pretty much cooked. 2 mill isn't a lot and 1 year is great but I don't know what he's going to do at even strength there. He's mostly a power play specialist and there's no room for him on Chicago's 1st unit. He's basically another version of Lecavalier.

He's a fringe third liner who wasn't coming back short of overpayment and he's a fan favorite who's also the pest of pests (which is why he had an insane penalty differential that lockout season). It's also Toronto. They traded a conditional pick and D'Amigo for a retread Frattin (and I believe unsigned?), they traded Gunnarsson/Phaneufs steady D partner for Polak for seemingly no reason, and they signed the Clarkson contract.

They do silly things.

I would've loved Komarov here personally. At like 1.5 to 1.75 but still.

Would Nonis be silly enough to trade for Lecavalier? :)

They're not that silly. :sarcasm:

Seriously though, mayhaps. Logistically they could use a center and their management is stupid to begin with, but they already have the Clarkson contract and are the definition of bipolar when it comes to what direction they want to go in.

I think Niskanen's is atrocious. It just looks okay next to the rest. He's broken 30 points twice in his career and he just got 40 million+.

It's deceptively bad because of how atrocious a lot of other deals are and the big year he had. If he regresses to his mean, which he very likely will, that's a pretty bad contract. Still not as bad as Orpik though.
