92-93 is in the books. Edmonton who I thought would tail off has a strong second half. Lemieux gets hurt for the Pens who find a new threat in Washington. Wayne Gretzky takes advantage of Mario's injury and wins the scoring title.

92-93 the year of the Cinderella story. For the first time in 26 years the cup is heading to Bay St. As the Toronto Maple Leafs have won it. Despite everyone hoping for another Oilers - Pens battle both teams were up set. Pittsburgh without the services of Mario for the 1st 4 games was taken down in 6 by the NY Islanders while the Oilers succumbed in the Campbell Conference Finals for the 2nd straight year to the same hot upstart Leafs. In the finals those Leafs beat the defensive juggernaut Washington Capitals in 6.

Pissed off that OOTP still has not managed to fix Gretzky's career trajectory in terms of becoming a pure playmaker, even if he breaks the scale with his 27 assist rating or something that he had at his peak. But could be just using their engine and not the more real thang option.
I would keep an eye on his goal scoring rating around as early as around 1989. He simply had decided by that point to not shoot, even if that meant he did not hit 1000 career goals. But his shooting percentage obviously dropped considerably as well.

For the 2nd straight year a team has come out of nowhere to win it as the Dallas Stars win their 1st cup in their 1st year in their new hometown. The Stars defeated Mario Lemieux and the Pens in 7 hard fought games. As for Gretzky and the Oilers they were the victims of a 1st round upset by the San Jose Sharks.

After a 3 month long lockout the NHL played a shortened 48 games schedule in 1995. To noones supries it was the Oilers and Pens at the top of the league however Wayne and Mario now had some company at the top from Boston Bruins star center Eric Lindros.

Its the 3rd straight year of the upset as the St.Louis Blues come out of nowhere to win their 1st Stanley Cup. The Oilers and Pens went out early and like I predicted Vancouver took the next step.

For the 4th consecutive year the luckiest team, not the best team wins the Stanley Cup. The Montreal Canadiens christen the Molson Centre with a championship in its 1st season. Its a record 25th cup for the famed franchise. Grtetzky and the Oilers go out early without much of a fight and one wonders with Messier and Gretzky now at 35 do the Oilers look to trade both for value before its too late

The riots of happiness are occurring as the Vancouver Canucks have won their 1st Stanley Cup sweeping the NY Rangers whose drought is now at 57 years. Led by Peter Forsberg,Jaromir Jagr,Nik Lidstrom, and Trevor Linden the Canucks are a prime example of building through the draft.

98-99 is over. Pittsburgh and Vancouver are on top, but the NY Rangers are right there trying to break a 59 year curse. Mario and Jagr fight for supremacy as Gretzky is now an afterthought as the Oilers sit near the bottom of the league.

Jubilation in NY has been replaced by sadness in Edmonton. Wayne Gretzky has decided to retire today. The greatest player to ever lace them up. Leaves the NHL with over 3000 points and 5 Stanley Cups all with the Edmonton Oilers.
