Necas and Fleury have contracts ending after 2 years. This ends with Svech and a bunch of UFAs.Glad he's signed. Any thoughts on the why behind it being a 1 year deal? That seemed pretty unexpected.
I think it’s a fair deal. I wonder if the single year is for expansion draft purposes...?
I think the later is a dream butwould have preferred a 2nd year term for that hit, but good to avoid arbitration at any time.
if he and Fast click he could have a breakout year in the 20-20+ range, might even be enough to make Jordo not look like a black hole offensively
I don't think $2M is too much at all. Necas scores 16G, 36P (9 on the PP) and was awful defensively and had to be sheltered and people call him untouchable. Foegele scores 13G, 30P (none on the PP) and people say he's replacement level.
The example I give is extreme on purpose as I do understand Necas is 3 years younger and has offensive skills Foegele doesn't have (nor will ever have) so there's the skill / potential element, but I see a bit more in Foegele than maybe others do. McGinn doesn't have his size, doesn't have his speed, has a career high of 30P in 80 games (which included 3 PP Points) vs. Foegele having 30P in 68 games (with No PP Points) and playing in all situations.
Maybe that's all we'll ever see from Foegele is a 30-35 point player, but if he brings the speed, energy, and keeps improving defensively, I think the contract is just fine. If he keeps improving his offensive game and becomes a 40+ point player, the contract is fantastic.
I think the reason that it's 1 year is Foegele betting on himself down the road and the Canes didn't want to offer more long term until he proves himself.
In the end, it's a contract that works for both teams and gives the Canes an interesting playing card for the ED.
I'm not comfortable holding that against McLovinImo I feel like he skates well and is a good energy player. But everything else is very below average. Keep in mind he put up those points being stapled to two of the best playmakers on the team. When he was on a line with jstaal he seemed to just disappear. Not to mention there are long stretches of games where he is just invisible. I think he is what he is right now and won't turn into anything more. Lmao I sure hope he proves me wrong now that I talked all this shit.
Folks have talked here previously about how there was a fire or drive that existed during the 2018-19 season that was lacking on last year's team. What disappoints me about Foegele is that he is a prime example of that group.
During the Washington and NYI series there Foegele scored 5 goals and 9 points in 11 games and looked really good doing it. He was creating his own dangerous chances with consistency. Unfortunately I can't recall one stretch of games last year where he ever looked nearly that good. He was pretty much invisible in the Playoffs. Personally I didn't see nearly as much fight out of him last season despite him playing more sound hockey.
That said Foegele is still the 3rd or 4th best 5v5 scorer on the team. Which is likely why the Canes are looking to still add a scorer. His 20 5v5 goals over the past 2 years place him among good company in the NHL.
Listening to the Dundon interview a couple of weeks ago, I think the Canes are feeling that increase goal scoring will come from players taking a step forward in development (Necas, Foegele and even Svech) along with a bit of a rebound from some other guys like Nino, Staal and Trochek.
Canes were 11th in the NHL in goal scoring last year (GF/GP), so a it doesn't take much of a bounce back/step forward to near top 5. There will be puts and takes as some guys will likely have down years as well, but staying with the same group has a reasonable chance to improve without adding anyone.
It's weird because under these circumstances I don't know what a good contract looks like anymore.
That's easy. Just go to any mainboard thread on any contract signing and you'll easily find a dozen posters that will tell you what a deal their team got on a player signing, compared to the subject of the thread.

Team goal: next time someone signs a player, at least 15 of us show up and talk amongst ourselves about how much better the Foegele deal looks in light of this new bad signing.
You do know that this will happen if you dare us to it.Team goal: next time someone signs a player, at least 15 of us show up and talk amongst ourselves about how much better the Foegele deal looks in light of this new bad signing.

Obviously we would never actually gang up to do some organized HFBoards antics, and make fools out of ourselves, no matter how stupid we would feel for example that Buffalo signing Olofsson for two at 3M+ per is in comparison to Foegele's contract.Send up a Batsignal plz (a Canes-signal?) bc I'm never on the main boards.
