my parents have a house on Oak Island. with the expected storm surge, for real that entire island might be **** underwater by the weekend. scary stuff.

My grandmother lives on OI and evacuated days ago. Last time something like this hit there, it completely wiped the sand dunes down to flat sand. You could stand in the middle of the island with a clear line of sight to both the waterway and the ocean on either side of you. It’s a creepy thing to realize that the landscape is totally gone.

Also, the pier at the old Oak/Yaupon divide is still cut in half from Matthew damage. I’d imagine it will be completely gone after this is over.

If needed I can make a trip out to stave off the apocalypse.

For I have seen that lo, on the 3rd day of the most recent troubles, Dave, clad in white linen robes shall descend from the heavens upon a giant pretzel, and take the believers to safety in Beervana while casting the doubters and macrobrew fans into a lake of fiery beer cheese.

The Bible says there won't be another cleansing by water like in Noah's time, but it doesn't mention beer.

5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6 Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “Two pounds of wheat for a day’s wages, and six pounds of barley for a day’s wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!”

How much is that in ready beer, if we assume there's no shortage on water?

yeah if it's cat 4 or 5 when it hits landfall then even Fort Caswell is at threat of being completely obliterated. I rode out a cat 3 on OI when I was a teenager and that was enough hurricane drama for a lifetime. unfortunately I've been through several other ones in addition to that.

I could make 5 gallons of a pretty nice american wheat ale with that if I have some hops and yeast as well

That’s insanity. I hope everything turns out ok for them, but that’s a ****ing stupid decision.
I completely agree. What's worse is the mom is 80 years old and would only leave if he did. If he wants to be a "macho" idiot that's one thing, but do what's right for your mother.

I am furious. And scared for them. All I can do is pray.

They are saying its going to staal on the coast a bit too so they are just gonna get pounded. Leave your house behind, thats what you have insurance for its not worth your life.

Your run of the mill homeowners insurance and what it actually covers in a hurricane situation, or natural disaster can be sketchy. Hopefully they have Hurricane insurance.

That’s just terrible. He does realize if something happens, there won’t be anybody to come and rescue his dumb ass?

I just hope he isn’t stupid enough to try and leave mid-hurricane. Every year I swear I read a story about some poor idiot who tries to ride it out, realize that that was a bad idea, and then drown in their car trying to cross a flooded street.

Here’s to hoping they avoid the worst of it :(

I didn't want to say anything but even raynman in New Bern is risking a whole hell of a lot by trying to ride out the storm. I know the storm made a fortuitous turn last night but man, New Bern is way out there and super susceptible to flooding. it's hard for me to judge peoples' actions but it definitely feels like a very, very bad choice. staying in Wilmington is tremendously stupid. so stupid I'm getting worked up typing this. between the intercoastal waterway, the Cape Fear river, and the coast, there's so many opportunities for Serious **** Flooding. nevermind the wind blowing your house down. your whole **** is going to be underwater and you'll be Katrina'd for weeks if you're not careful. thousands died in Katrina, and it wasn't from tree limbs either. ok I have to stop typing now.

True. As someone who recently bought a house i opted to not go with flooding coverage. Now i my be regretting that decision.

My in-laws have a house on the SC coast, and their area got leveled when Matthew hit. They were very fortunate, but still had about 6k worth of damage to their house. They have Hurricane insurance, but the deductable is 20k so it covered nothing. It's basically there in case your house gets demolished, or sustains major damage. Their home owners policy did not cover the damage because it was due to a named storm. So, out of pocket was their only choice. I think they've since adjusted all of that in case that happens again, but now pay more per month. It's a racket.
