I don’t think he’s a bust, I just don’t think he has the wheels for the NHL game. Said that after I watched him play last year as well.

I've said from the moment that we acquired him that skating was his biggest drawback. That said if he can stay healthy I think that he could still be a top 9 NHLer for us because of his skill level and hockey IQ. I won't write him off after 1 rookie game in his sophomore pro season, we'll see how he and Benson show in preseason as IMO Benson didn't exactly wow me yesterday either although he showed a lot of good things.

I think you can tell everyone was shaking off the cobwebs and rust after lots of time off, aside from Bouchard

How did McLoed look in person? I really liked his game tonight. Kid can fly.
He didnt stand out to me honestly. I was at last years game too and I thought he stood out more then. As i said though i was nearly at ice level so i find it hard to judge relative speed, which is his forte.

Maybe. But top 9 wouldn't be bad either

If he does make it I’ll be happy. Not sure he will but he is a very cerebral player. In his defence from last nights game he did suffer a wicked concussion last playoffs. Perhaps he was a bit tentative.

The game was pretty sloppy, but a few players stood out.

Wells tracked the puck really well.

Skinner made good decisions when moving the puck. The goal against wasn't his fault.

Benson looked good. He was aggressive in his pursuit of the puck and got a little chippy when the team deflated a bit in the second. Quicker on his skates than I remember from last year.

McLeod seemed to take the puck whenever he wanted it. He was quick and sharp defensively. That kid can fly. I could see him becoming a speedy defensive specialist at the NHL level like

Maksimov put himself in scoring positions regularly. Had a great chance on a 2-on-1, but held the puck a little too long.

Safin looked good. He had several great scoring chances. I think he'll have a nice rookie campaign in Bakersfield.

Lavoie had a few good moments and a few obvious rookie mistakes. A work in progress.

Starrett skated better than I expected for a kid that size, could be a nice addition for the Bakersfield bottom 6. Very good in the faceoff circle and made a few smart reads defensively. Too bad about the sucker punch, glad he's okay.

Bouchard mostly made the right plays throughout the game. Made a few blunders, but I was impressed by his composure. It didn't matter what Calgary threw at him, he didn't get rattled, especially with the puck on his stick. A lot to like about his game.

Samorukov had a mixed night, but mostly a positive outing. Got caught puck watching a couple of times, but settled down in the second half of the game.

Desharnais is enormous. He looked like a Coke machine, skated like one, although he did make a few nice plays defensively. He didn't hesitate for a second to stand up for Marody when he got run into the bench.

Marody had a mixed game. I think he'll get better as the preseason rolls on, it just wasn't his night.

Overall, it looked like the first pre-pre-season game of the year and everyone was rusty. Calgary's goalie looked to be in mid-season form. Dube was the best forward for either team, I expect he'll spend much of the season in the NHL.

Stay safe man. Your neck of the woods is sure getting hard hit by weather in the last number of years. Its tragic but the new normal weather is pretty scary in Atlantic Canada and one wonders if it will be the cause of more people leaving. From flooding to extreme snow accumulations resulting in shutdown cities, towns, to Hurricanes.

The worst we get here in the past decades is fire and smoke.

I work for the Power Company so I know it takes time to get people back online. The hurricane was not as bad as Juan back in 2003 but it took out most of the province. The problem is Nova Scotia has big trees so when the wind comes, they go down. They are down all over Halifax, along with a crane that toppled. I have a bad feeling we are in for a very violent winter. The last 3 have been nothing so we are due.
As for people leaving, that happens a lot in Atlantic Canada. Our economy is crap. [mod]

My favourite part of this game was when Vesey switched to the backhand to dump it in for no particular reason, failed, gave it away, tried to collect himself, fell over at centre ice with nobody near him, then changed in shame.

Dude is bad at the ECHL level and he's 3-5 years older than most everyone in this game. What on earth did Chia see in this guy?

I saw the crane toppled that was DT, it made the front page here. There was ample warning to dissemble the crane, and that would probably have been advisable with this monster coming through. Lots of work and time lost though in dismantling cranes. If they don't do it, they should more publicize the danger. Some of the news reports are so silly saying a crane is such a super structure. I've known these to topple before on jobsites. Really scary situation and people could have been killed. At minimum the Crane ought to have not been in a position that was sideways to the wind. That probably contributed to it going down. Cranes are somewhat stable and can lift due to counterweights. But laterally they can be susceptible to over 100K sustained winds.

Atlantic Canada is a wonderful place, particularly for retirees, but the weather is increasingly a problem.

I’d rather we kept the 7th round pick after seeing Vesey in action.

Not sure Why everyone is so gung ho about him. His hockey IQ looks low. With that speed you would expect more then what he conjured up against a bunch of nobodys. He seems to take himself out of good scoring positions and doesn't create open spaces with that speed. He just sort of skates fast and shoots right into the goalies crest from low scoring areas. The Oilers have had plenty of those over the years.

First game after almost 3-4 months for the players.... You expected stardom and not some rust?

If your trying to crack an NHL roster, there are no excuses. Look at Dube on the Flames roster. All over the ice, creating scoring chances and putting in the work. Marody is not an NHL player. He might be better pursuing a music career in Nashville. Guy has the intensity of a doormat, terrible skater, and talks a lot of game.

Crazy assessment from one rookie game.

Because he’s stood out and created chances with his speed. Not sure if you noticed the two on one he created through sheer speed and anticipation (which requires a hockey IQ) along with several other chances where he passed off.
