This may sound odd, but I actually wonder if playing in an overseas pro league for a year or two could be potentially good for Gillies. He is always going to be splitting time in Stockton with another goalie, without getting a Lion's share of the load. If he could find a team really in need of a goalie, and get a starting job, even just for a year, so he is playing constantly in a professional environment, I wonder.

I know it will never happen. And it may not improve anything. It was just a thought that crossed through my head.

Right now I haven't been overly impressed with the guys vying for the backup role. It is early, yes, but I'd currently give the inside track to Gillies. At least he faced NHL competition. Rittich not so much. It will be interesting to see how Glass plays. That might light a fire under Gillies/Rittich.

My hope is Glass or Parsons impress.
Right now, both guys have been bad. Gillies less bad, but still bad. Rittich just straight up bad.

Dunno. IF Parsons or Glass really impress, what kind of roster moves do you do?

Like say Glass gets in, posts 0.930 save percentages in 3 games, while Ritter and Gillies continue to suck; did he deserve the backup role? Parsons has to be in the AHL this season, at worst, so do you trade Gillies or Rittich?

Really wondering why Mason or Lehtonen didn't get a camp invite over Glass. Both guys have had success in their career, and not that long ago.

I think we could pick someone off waivers too.

I know the Leafs have McElhinney and Sparks

Could be.
All I know is the backend has been a sore spot for years now, and the backup still hasn't been figured out.

I'd rather not go back to the McElhinney well.

The best back-up on the market is Pickard

Gillies played a really good game the other night with the exception of about a minute and part of the cause of that 1 minute was his teammates. Gillies looked confident and by contrast Rittich looked like a fish out of water. Parsons is far from being in the NHL, Glass is just a good option to the shooter tutor, and many of the goalies mentioned are not any better than what we already have.

Um yes has beens have really worked well for the Flames in the past... Lack, Hiller, Elliot.

To develop goalies you have to give them opportunities and minutes on the ice. Hellebuyck played in tandem with Pavlec and Hutchinson while all three were pretty terrible and then comes on the scene last year and drove the team to the playoffs.

IMO Gillies is not far off from a similar success. A little confidence, a little better positioning and to eliminate some of his gaffes will result in a goalie that can push Smith.

Gillies isn't far off success, in that Hellebuyck didn't have to completely rework his entire goalie style.
Essentially, Gillies isn't far off; as Bennett isn't far off from being a 1C. A lot of Ifs, Ands and Buts.

Gillies and Rittich don't give me much confidence.

The problem with Gillies is that he seemed to let in the same type of goals that he did last year and in juniors where he is done so early and terrible at playing the angles and letting goals go in over his shoulder.

The fact that he still struggles with that doesn't give me much confidence that he is going to improve it suddenly. He is a big guy so theoretically he should be able to cut those down but he is so poor with the angles he takes it seems like they are always open.

Rittich I guess struggled with consistency which he always does so I guess there is concern for him too.

If we could move one and go with a Parsons/gillies or Rittich pair at the AHL that would be best and bring in a guy like Pickard but I don't see anyone giving anything up for either guy. I guess another year at ECHL wouldn't hurt for Parsons as he hasn't looked like a world beater but I would prefer to see the jump in competition so we can find out sooner than later what we have because Smith is a bad enough option this year let alone re-signing him again for more years.

I'm higher on Pickard than most, as I think he did a damn good job on a historically terrible Colorado team when Varlamov went down. He's also 26, and still rocking a career .913 in the NHL despite that rough season being the majority of his games and having a .904 that year.

While I'm really hoping Gilles can step in, Pickard would be my choice for potentially inexpensive backup option if we are looking externally.

The goalies people are mentioning are just as big if question marks as Gullies or Rittich. If we're going to bail on them, it will be for much closer to a sure thing

And Packard is a shitty f***ing goalie. I've been saying it for years.

Also, with Gullies, he wasn't as bad as people make him out to be when Smith was hurt. He won his first two starts, lost the 3rd 2-1, lost the 4th 3-1 (the game Lundquist made 50 saves) and then got lit up by the Pens in his 5th. Smith then returned and Fillies never started again until our season was dine and roster depleted.

Pickard is definitely more proven than either guy, his NHL numbers are much better and his AHL numbers are at worst equal with him having more games than Gillies or Rittich at each level.

You could argue he isn't enough of an upgrade to make it worth it but he is clearly more proven and has less questions than either of the guys we have.

Does Czarnik have a shot at making the team?
He was always pretty much a lock to be in the top 12 given his contract and Treliving comments. Worst case scenario was top 14, as in, in the pressbox to start the season. There's was and still is zero chance the Flames would waive Czarnik given the immense interest in his services during free agency.

On the main board, he's slotted on the fourth line, do you think that's where he'll end up?
