Guess Flames brass are planning on graduating Andersson at this point (not on the prospects list).

Rookie camp is based on age/experience. I have a feeling that if Mangiapane's season hadn't been ended by shoulder surgery he wouldn't be there either, unless the cutoff is more than 10 NHL games.

I'm really looking forward to seeing which players are going to China. There are the locks to play for the Flames and then there are the "shoulds" and then there is always one or two wild cards. Looking forward to seeing which "shoulds" and "wild cards" are on the China roster.
From what I understand the Flames are taking 26 players and I assume that will include 3 goalies, 8 d-men, and 15 forwards.

For the locks:

Goal - (3)
Smith, Rittich, Gillies

D-men - (5)
Gio, Brodie,
Hanifin, Hamonic,
Stone

Forwards - (11)
JG, Mony, Lindholm,
Chucky, Backs, Neal,
Bennett, Janko, Frolik,
Czarnik, Ryan

I think if you're on the China roster and are not classified as a "lock" I would think that Flames management feels you have a decent chance at making the team unless your preseason play completely sucks and someone elsewhere plays lights out forcing the Flames hand (see Mony and Chucky and to some extent Janko).

I wonder if Valimaki will go to China?

I assume the prospect camp is open to the public? If it is, I might drop in one or two days. Anyone else planning on going down to the rink?

Pretty sure it has to do with him being viewed as an NHLer by the brass more than 10 games. Because Mangi got 10 games, and Oliver's got the same amount of professional experience.

Who know though. They gave him a real defenceman number, I think he's a good candidate to make this team.

Normally these things are open to the public.
Umm. I was hoping to pop down Friday, but now I've been pulled into a get together with a client.
Saturday should be pretty busy, I might attend. I live right near the grounds.

Andersson has 11 career games, Gillies 12 and neither are there. Mangiapane has 10 and is. Like I said though, he could be there because of his injury last season.

And getting your low number means squat, lots of guys get a low number and never got that close to making the team (Poirier, Wotherspoon, Foo, the first Shore... Etc). As fir Andersson being a good candidate to make the team, of course he is.

Anyone know why they're not doing the Penticton thing anymore? Is it China-related somehow? Always enjoyed seeing four (or more?) teams come together and have their prospects compete.

China related, the young stars classic is two teams and two uni teams.

So to piggyback off this, Calgary is only playing against Edmonton in that one Battle of Alberta game right? The only other competition will be scrimmages amongst calgary prospects?

Yup, the scrimmage will be Calgary v Calgary, and then on Sunday they'll play Edmonton. I grabbed some tickets for my dad and I to enjoy.

Pretty much. My cousin, uncle and grandfather are going and invited me so I said why not.

It'll give a nice little view of them, playing a rival. In the inter-squad games, you kind of don't want to put one of the other teams' best players through the glass or you become a Pat Sieloff pariah. We might get a look at Yamamoto, Jones, Bear and Bouchard for Edmonton; depending on who they bring.

I'm mostly excited to see how Valimaki looks among his peers at this new level (there's AHL guys, CHL guys, D+1,2,3's). At the WHL level it was clear he was likely the best player on the ice every time he stepped foot on it (+/- some other players on the other team) but he'd have easily been the WHL defenceman of the year without injuries. I'd like to see how he looks compared to guys like Kylington/Bear/Jones, guys who've played professional hockey for a year or two.

My guess would be this:

Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindhom, Tkachuk, Backlund, Neal, Bennett, Ryan, Frolik, Jankowski, Lazar, Hathaway, Czarnik, Foo, Dube/Mangiapane

Giordano, Brodie, Hanifin, Hamonic, Andersson, Stone, Kulak, Valimaki/Kylington/Prout

Smith, Rittich, Gillies

Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindhom, Tkachuk, Backlund, Neal, Bennett, Ryan, Frolik, Jankowski, Lazar, Hathaway, Czarnik, Foo, Dube/Mangiapane

Giordano, Brodie, Hanifin, Hamonic, Andersson, Stone, Kulak, Valimaki/Kylington/Prout

Smith, Rittich, Gillies

They still play games at home, that'll need warm bodies with some experience; My thinking is they'll take:

Almost certain:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Neal
Tkachuk - Backlund - Lindholm
Bennett - Ryan - Czarnik
Kids/Plugs

Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Valkimaki - Andersson
Kids/Plugs

Smith
Rittich
Parsons

At home they'll keep:

Frolik - Jankowski - Hathaway
Mangiapane - Lazar - Foo
PLUGS

Kulak - Stone
Kylington - Prout
PLUGS

Gillies
Glass

Essentially, the guys who go to China are the main core that needs to click. You need the new guys to make the trip to improve bonding. You keep a couple NHL Vets at home (Stone, Frols) because you know what those guys will do and you need someone to mentor the guys that are staying with the team. This will be an interesting camp, because the main guys don't get back until the 21st/22nd. So they'll miss 4 games in NA while they're gone to China. Have a feeling they might keep the second line here in Calgary... that being said, I don't know if they do that, because you need to find out who finds chemistry with Mony/Johnny.
