A lot of good ones have already been mentioned.

Couple years ago I was a big fan of Surviving Jack, starring Christopher Meloni. Shame it only got 7 episodes, but that's how Fox rolls. If they had waited to air the show in the fall instead of the spring, it probably would have picked up a second season.

New sea creatures are found.
People trying to track down where they came from.

Then it just ends. I guess production costs were too high.

On NYC public access in the mid 90s there was a wealth of amazing entertainment, but in particular was one awesome short-lived show. No - I'm not talking about the one where it was some creep taking videos of hot girls in central park to music, but it was the "Doggie Doo Dollar Half Hour". Some guy in the East Village would put dollar bills on the street and take video from the window of people picking them up and sometimes putting them in their pockets. They just happened to have dog poop on the underside.

Sports Night would be at the top for me if it weren't for it's second season :)

William Macy was in second season.

Life on Mars.
Last Resort.

Haha.....same two I wanted to mention. (And of course Firefly.)

Although I was glad that Last Resort didn't go past a season, as l enjoyed the resolution. Dragging that situation out further would have been unnecessary and tiresome imo.

Stark Raving Mad seemed to have potential from what I recall.

I also enjoyed the bits of Defying Gravity I saw.

Firefly, Undergrads and Freaks and Geeks are all good picks.

I sometimes wonder if it isn't merciful to kill shows off before they inevitably become terrible though.

Terra Nova wasn't terrible, but fell into the same traps of most of the like-minded shows before it. Plus I think it was too big-budget for TV.
