You know what would be awesome for Klingberg's value? A Stanley Cup. And playing with Slavin. That should be the pitch. Not saying he would take it or even should. But that should be the pitch.

He should definitely take it, IMO.

1.48 million savings? How did you get to that number? Is that because its a 1.08 million hit this season and 1.48 next?

What happened was, I selected his name on this list and misread the table.

I feel like everyone bagging on that Habs fan for that comment is completely missing his point.

His point was "everyone says 'yaaay great move to take a 4th line center who hasn't proven anything for 8 years' and 'boo terrible move to take an old guy who has been a stud his whole career.' That's hfb in a nutshell." His comment was about age bias.

And I think, in that particular analysis, he's exactly right. He says it wasn't actually about KK, and I believe him. I mean, it's obvious why those two examples are front of mind for him, lol. But his point is 100% valid, and I don't think in this case he's ragging on the Canes, or on Canes fans, at all.
Yeah, at first glance one might think it's more of the same Canes and Koko bashing from a Habs fan, but I think it was a little more than that. He has a fair point about age bias in the sport, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was still adding in his saltiness about Koko. It's legit to be concerned about Burns IMO even though I think he'll be fine for at least the 1st and probably 2nd years, but MaxPac is 33 not 37 lol. On a 1 year deal no less! I think it was a Knights fan harping on MaxPac being old and used up/injured. Probably coping.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see where he lands. If he wants to play for a contender and thus isn't taking just any team, it'd be nice if he took a discount for us, but he'd be on the 3rd line though right? Unless some nights we lighten the load for Burns. I can't see him being thrilled at not being locked in the top 4. So, it seems unlikely for us, and I'm sure the FO wants to spend the money on forwards instead.

The selling point would be 1st PP time to boost his numbers. Burns doesn't have to be a lock to play there. More intriguing would be the possibility of playing both on the 1st unit, getting a RHS on the left half wall.

With EV, you never know how things would shake out. de Haan unexpectedly got squeezed out of the Top 4 in 18-19. Pesce's versatility (LD/RD) opens up possibilities in regards to Skjei sliding down, even.

Just spitballing, but it would be a very Canes-ian thing to do.

Did you guys all know that Trocheck had 11G, 31 points (11 secondary assists) in 997 min. of 5v5 ice time last year and that Jordan "should be on the 4th line" Staal had 13G, 28P (8 secondary assists) in 987 min. of 5v5 ice time.

Most common line-mates:
Trocheck: Necas, Svechnikov, Teravainen
Staal: Fast, Niederreiter, Lorentz

Oh, forgot to mention that Staal's line faced the toughest competition and Trocheck's face the 2nd easiest (behind Kotkaniemi).

This isn't the cap hell you're making it out to be.

1) You're making high, high end assumptions on the next contracts for all of Stutzle, Zub, Weegar, and Norris. I wouldn't be surprised if all 4 of those contracts come in under what you've got for them.

2) Even if I grant you all of those assumptions, you've still got $4.3m in cap space to fill 6 spots. A quick cap dump of Zaitsev fixes that immediately.

3) After that year, they get $4m back in dead cap from Murray, Ryan, and Del Zotto.

Their real issue is finding a goalie. But I don't think that means adding a few exciting pieces with the cap space they do have is a bad thing.
Remember when i was overvaluing their players? Norris just signed 8 x 7.95m. Almost an entire million than what i had him. Senators might just screw this up for next season.

Add another year and don’t forget that for a long part of that year he was stuck on a couple of goals (October through all of January he had only 2 g). Jordan Staal Game by Game Stats and Performance | ESPN

Also, Tro is gone for a reason.

1) I don't see the 33 -34 being a big deal in terms of "adding a year". Also, at 33 he came into camp with the best fitness of any player.
2) re: stuck on a couple of goals. So we can cherry pick which parts of a season counts and which don't?

Anyhow, my point wasn't that Jordan should be the offensive 2C, my point was that people saying "put him on the 4th line" are biased and ignoring facts. He's perfect for the role of a shutdown C on a "3C" line that doesn't get PP, gets tons of PK and faces the tough competition.

I also wonder the season split on Tro's 31 5v5 pts looked like. The 2nd half of the season it felt so frustrating to watch the Svech, Tro, Necas/TT line play 5v5 hockey on the back half. They just weren't getting enough done.

--------
Also interesting discovery while looking at 5v5 stats...

Trocheck averaged 1.87 pts per 60 minutes
KK averaged 2.12 pts per 60 minutes (weaker line mates, but also weaker competition, that's promising)
------
Seth Jarvis was our #1 guy 5v5 with 2.33 per 60.
Nino was #2 with 2.26 per 60
Aho tied for #2 with Nino
-------
Patches last year scored 2.35 per 60 5v5, (This would be best on the Canes last year)

Burns last year scored at 1.02 per 60 5v5 (Pretty bad, would put him 5th on our team's defense last year. For reference Ian Cole scored at 1.01 per 60 5v5)

I'm assuming this is aimed at Gardiner? I'm seeing that the cap savings on a buyout would be $1.48M, but we have to replace the player with that amount.

We weren’t allowed to buyout Gardiner during the first window because he wasn’t considered in game shape. I don’t see why we’d be able to buy him out now.

He’s 22 (I think) and an excellent player. Rocket on the PP. The deal is fine. A hair high … but the cap going up helps that.
Nothing is wrong with the deal.

With giving Zub and Stutzle very reasonable deals and Debrincat getting his QO, Senators only have about 10 million plus the growth of the cap to fill their entire roster (8-9 players). Filling out adequate depth across the board becomes difficult.

At some point, Staal should be our 4C with important face off/end game responsibilities.

Probably won’t happen but swapping Drury and Jordan to 3C/4C with:
Kase-Drury-Necas as 3 (great speed) &
tbd-Staal-fast as 4 (not a martinook fan but if we had to pencil him in so be it)

Could be a better line mix.

Jordan's line carries the Canes in the playoffs outplaying Bergeron and Panarin lines. Then gets a demotion to 4th line already. Tough crowd!

I guess I don’t see where you’re getting 8-9 players … they’ve got everyone under contract except a RH D (who will come when they dump Zaitsev, prayers for that).

Unless you’re projecting 3-4 years down the road?
