The D isn't good enough even with Saint Hughes

BUT

So far the forecheck has done nothing to help, it has been really bad allowing an almost unfettered exit for the opposition making the D face unchecked forwards with little help from forwards.

At this point there should be more concern with the forecheck and back checking.

Sure the vets will coast in these games but again this team is looking to be shot out of a cannon and the schedule is not too friendly to start

Lots of media are already setting the table for injuries to be a reason for whatever, like Boeser and Mikheyev might be missing and the D aren't good enough at getting the puck out. But they will also praise the last 50+ games under Bruce and that was with that same defence.

These losses might not indicate what the team will be but they do show a lack of depth and many other deficiencies, the team has not been capable of flipping the "on" switch in the past with most of the same players, is it not reasonable to have a concern that they will not do it this year? Not really showing too much of an improvement over the last few years either, except they are losing more and scoring less in the exhibition than in previous seasons, it is the price of playing rookies but they have also played the vets

Once again the "Sports Shows" are depicting the fans as fanatical idiots in a massive panic about these games. Mere concern has been elevated to earth shattering proportions of fans by the media.

Really what is to be expected of this group? Much more of the same? If anything fans are feeling resigned to this quality of team and they are growing indifferent to the team.

The team is just simply not doing enough to engage the fans or create much hope, doubling down on a losing group, contributing to the cap problem and showing one single shiny new penny appears to the work of Benning 2.0.

Fans still see the same problems from the previous regime, again they missed the golden opportunity to clean house and restart without much fan ire but instead they did what they said they would not do (I think thats' called ....) and fans can see there will be issues in the future even if they have the money from a raised cap the team just isn't good enough.

Making the playoffs only means they are in the top half of the league and in some cases not even that depending upon the strengths of the division.

Is being 16th worst in the league (glass half empty) any better than being 16th best (glass half full) with an aging and capped out team?

The new management is not instilling one iota of faith in their abilities or adding to the trust of fans. What have they done differently than Benning?

meh, it is only one game

Finally got through this game. And man, what a waste of a game - roster really no different than in the first split-squad game in Calgary. Ridiculous to be dressing a team this bad this late in the preseason. Guillaume Brisebois getting PP QB time?

And to the bad roster's credit, they hung in there pretty well for half a game, before getting outscored 6-1 in the final 30 minutes.

- the only thing really significant in this game was the Wolanin-Burroughs pairing, which held their own in top pairing minutes against a nearly full-strength NHL team. Burroughs continues his really strong preseason and looks to have taken a step up from last year - skating better, looks more confident with the puck. Totally solid 3rd pairing guy. Wolanin had a terrific game - skated well, picked up two assists. Had a better game than any of Rathbone's games so far, which is an interesting development. Has really positioned himself in the lead for the roster depth positions.

- other 4 D - Brisebois, Juulsen, Keeper, Dekeyser - were all bad. And all were sent to the AHL today aside from Dekeyser who was mercifully terminated from his PTO. Brisebois and Juulsen are just incredibly limited players who are #3-4 AHL types at best. Keeper probably needs 20-30 AHL games before he can really be evaluated coming off his injury but was behind the play significantly in this game.

- Garland and Podkolzin were by far the two best forwards, as you'd expect. No idea why they dressed a top-9 winger pairing without any of the 3 Cs who might be centering them. Dries works hard but didn't really cut it.

- Lazar and Dickinson are the same player except one is paid correctly. I'll disagree with some comments that Aman is better than Dickinson - they look and skate similarly, but Dickinson is a lot more physical and wins more puck battles in the trenches.

- Lockwood has had a flop of a preseason. Didn't really show any of the speed or jam that made him look effective at times to close out last season. Deservedly cut today.

- Hoglander has also had a flop of a preseason. Scored in this game but again looked isolated and kind of directionless and lost. Speed and hustle on the forecheck he showed at the start of last year to look very dynamic just isn't there.

- Stevens, Nielsen, Klimovich, Bains are all guys who are nowhere near the NHL and shouldn't really have received any more preseason action than the Calgary split squad games.

- Delia started well and finished not well.

Pretty sure teams are in cahoots and put out “gimme” lineups for the oppositions main roster to skate against and vice versa.

Like next game it will be Canucks regulars against Virtanen and the bottom of the roster.

I think Vancouver wanted the team at home to practice. Couldn't be bothered breaking up practice to waste a day or two of the main squad in Edmonton.

For sure, but this was an *exceptionally* weak team for the 3rd-last game of preseason.

Normally the first road game or two look like this and then it starts tightening up.

The AHL Canucks were hanging in the game for around 50 minutes ….It went sideways in the last 5 minutes when the Oilers got 3..

I actually found this game more entertaining than any of the other preseason games this year…in some weird David and Goliath way.
